I recently got a GX660 in the uk and am sending it back for a refund, the reason being i realized that the native screen res is pretty high which means it would struggle in some games. Yes i could lower it, but it makes stuff look blurry.
in the USA MSI sell the 660 with both 1366x768 and 1920x1080 screens, over here they only have the full hd screen.
So i was wondering what to do, i don't know if i could some time change the screen out for a lower resolution one as i can only find the full hd screen for sale separately and not the lower res one, if i could do that then i would probably stick with the 660. or i can get a gx740 instead with a bit lower native res of 1680x1050 but also less features.
i'm not sure what the fan noise is like compared on both either..
please some advice?

The GX740 still pulls its weight nicely and is upgradable.
I don't think it will make any noticeable difference.
I never play anything over 1400x1000 after that even on desktops it can be bad and reduce performance but gain quality.
Just curious so you sent the laptop back because it had a to big Native Res ?
SO ....... WHY ?
I don't fully understand this as i have the exact same model on order and i have heard this laptop can run any game on high despite the RES and even on lower RES it looks exactly the same.
As far as i can gather from other threads here the laptop is perfect in RES and Display.
What where your most worst problems ?
And why the need to game at a ridiculous 1920x1080 ?
Sorry my Fanboi mode broke out i see yeah you should keep it honestly do you really notice a difference on lower RES settings and are you setting your games to the exact same setting as your Laptop Display in the games SETTINGS ? -
my point is that lcd's look blurry out of their native resolution, games run better at lower rather than higher resolution because you gain more framerate.
So there lies the problem for me, the screen has 1920x1080 native resolution and if i lower it for more performance then everything is going to look blurry.
Yes most games will run well, but maybe not on future ones. That's why i would rather a lower native resolution.. i don't know, i have been stuck on this for a while -
I agree, 1080P is too much to handle for a single 5870. 1280x720 downscaled from 1080P does not look as good as native 720P.
1600x900 would be a perfect 16:9 res but very few notebooks have it. 1366x768 could end up looking too small but of course you get extremely good framerate with it. -
so i don't know what to do -
return and get gx640 or 740
-
one more question, do you get any problem on the 740 with the vent on the side with heat blowing onto your hand? -
Actually, if you use notebook cooler (which will elevate notebook), you won't notice any difference because of right hand vent. -

I've found, on the GX740 at least, that the gaming experience isn't at all bad at 1280x800. Sure, it's not ideal when compared to the native resolution, but the blurriness really isn't an issue.
-
I don't use the laptop keyboard so I can't tell you about the vent.

There is a thread about changing screens, can anyone tell me though if it is possible to swap out the lcd in the 660 to any 15.6" screen?
-
Can someone here tell me what other options i have for lower screen resolution gaming laptops? the best i can find is the alienware m15x which costs quite a bit more than the gx660 and also has less stuff in it but also only a 460m and no option of 470m or 5870m. not many laptops with 1366x768 or even 1600 x 900 for that matter
I still find it strange that MSI sell a 1366 x 768 screen laptop in the US but there are no screen replacements available anywhere.
any advice please?
edit: - i just found this medion laptop, i have no idea what they are like. click here for link is it any good? , ok it appears it is quite loud.. other than that everything else is what i would want.
after that there is another model here but can't find any reviews that mention how the noise is. -
Have you kept the ratio for the small resolution the same? When you do, the quality should look excellent.
My native is 1680x1050, but I play under 1280x800 and the quality is very nice. If I use antialiasing 4x, I could barely tell the difference. -

You just have to find the model number of the lower res screen and someone will have it for sale.
Or you can probably just find the connector type and browse through others with the same connector. -
I agree i drop down to 1600x900 and its fine not to blurry at all.
However i really find MSI Failed to realise this laptop is very poor playing games at 1920x1080.
I think we should just try and find a lower screen on ebay or something.
