    Hey guys,

I've finally decided on a laptop, cash in hand.. just waiting for newegg to get it in stock. Going with the GT60 0NE-249US.

    So far I'm planning on:
    SAMSUNG 840 Pro Series MZ-7PD256BW 2.5" 256GB

    CORSAIR Vengeance 16GB (2 x 8G) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) (x2) for 32gb ram

This is going to be my desktop replacement for video editing/encoding (using cuda), photo editing, programming, as well as 3d modeling and 2d modeling using custom software. I have a desktop built for actually running my plasma table, but being able to build/edit the entire project on the laptop, make the cutting paths for the table etc.. then transfer the files for the actual cutting.

It will also be used for car/truck custom computer tuning, along with 3d modeling of custom parts being built off for each vehicle individually. The way I do it right now takes very long..

I like the entrance/exit paths for the coolers, and plan on using filters on both. Lots of grinding dust, plasma-slag, etc where I am. I also plan on using a cooling pad when I can. What would you recommend for this laptop in particular (cooling pad)

Do you think the choices I've made as far as SSD and ram is good? If not, what would you recommend? I'm going with 32gb of ram because you can never have too much, and some of the software I use gobbles it up. That and so it will be future-proof for a good long time. Hopefully 2-3 years! Although no express-card slot does make me a bit sad..

I've also read some conflicting information. What exactly is the actual setup for the laptop? Does it have 2 harddrive sata 3 capacity, plus M-sata or 2x msata?

Could I run 2 msata drives and 2 harddrives? Or 1 msata, one ssd, and one HD? Can I buy the 2x msata adaptor separately?

My plan was windows/linux on the 256gb samsung 840 hd, using the stock 750gb HD. If I can squeeze one more in there (msata?) I would love to. That way I could have win7/8 on one ssd, and give linux it's own as well..

I'm just waiting for this laptop to be released to get it.. I'll probably buy the ssd/ram now, that way I can just 2-day the laptop or something.

    Thanks all for looking!

    Bump!

I'm sorry for spamming the question and bumping. It's just I need this lappy for next week, and need to make sure 100% it's going to do what I need. Since it gets released tomorrow, I'd like to get things moving from my end quickly, including buying the upgrades so they'll get here at the same time. I was also going to purchase another spare battery to swap / save wear and tear.

I'm also going to pick up an e-sata enclosure, with at least 2 drive bays. Plan on running 2x 1tb 7200rpm drives in raid redundancy. Maybe a 4x enclosure with raid striping and redundancy to upgrade to in the future. But most likely just 2 1tb drives for backuo.

    Any ideas?.

I guess I'll give some inputs....

Dude.. you're over killing.... Ya, I know you're in the professional field and doing 3d modeling and what not, but you already over killed it.

Now I'll tell you what I have in mind to get.

-That model in newegg you link is good.
-Keep the 12g ram, no need upgrade.
-Yes definitely get the SDD upgrade.
-You can remove the CD/DVD rom and replace it with a HDD, I believe it is a mSATA II (not 100%sure)
    That's it!!

    What you MIGHT need:
-2x 1TB HDD for back up. This really depend, do you REALLY have that much stuff to store? I don't know what exactly you do for work, but if you're not sure exactly how much stuff you have to store, I wouldn't throw that much money on back up yet... you can simply start off with just 1x 1TB HDD, and if it's for storage purposes, doesn't even has to be7200RPM, a low 5400 RPM works just fine.

    What you DON'T NEED:
    -extra 16gb of ram
-Cooling pad (test out the system first, before buying one. Not a single person has been complaining about over heating, yet.)

    What you DEFINITELY DON'T NEED:
-Extra battery........ just don't get it....you won't be needing one for an other year or two.. I have a 5years old laptop, and the battery works almost as new, might be draining a bit faster, but still works..

    Bottem Line:
You're throwing way too much money away....by the way that you're purchasing stuff, you seems like a person with TOO much money. Remember, EVERYTHING you mentioned here are future upgradeable. So you can always just get as little as possible, and buy them when you really really HAVE to.

Well, I'm starting to do quite a bit of video editing. I probably have 12 hours of 1080p video recorded. It takes up lots of space! I have 2 1tb hd's I use for backups currently, but they're 2.5" usb-powered and a bit slow. That's why I wanted an a/c powered esata with 7200rpm drives. Make transferring it much faster.

As far as the extra battery, I have inverters hardmounted in my vehicles, and carry a small one pretty much everywhere I go. Having a spare battery saves me downtime when I can't get power. Which is rare, since I also have a genset mounted in my truck, but the power is mechanical and a bit noisy.

As far as having too much money, I WISH. I work very hard for my money, in ways most people can't understand. The reason I was going 'all-out' from the start is because I like doing things right. That's why people bring me their cars, I don't half- things. Every bolt cleaned, either antiseized or loctited, and torqued to spec, and marked that it was torqued. Even doing fluid changes.

I know it seems like overkill, but when you waste hours that could be spent working waiting for your computer to finish doing something.. you'll understand. Time is money, and while it seems like quite a bit of money, the time it will save will pay for itself very quickly. I charge 85/hr shop time, 100/hr mobile time. I don't charge my customer's time waiting on the computer. Having to model engine bay's, suspension components, etc running back and forth from the computer to the car, measuring devices in hand takes more time than I'd like. Having to wait for rendering after I'm done aggravates me.

The cooling pad, well, heat kills pretty much everything. Even if the max temperatures it reaches is less than datasheet max, the cooler things run, the longer they run. If I could find a pad that fits the laptop perfectly, I'd probably 3m vhb it to the pad!

As far as ram, my current computer has 8gb and I max it out all the time. My aspirations for the newer laptop is far higher than this one.

I was posting the ssd/ram to make sure those brands/models are the ones that people hold in high esteem! Money is tight for everyone right now.

The car I'm currently working on is an s55 amg kompressor, and next car up is a brand new bentley supersport.

I also use a bunch of factory service manuals. I'm actually looking into those plug-in external monitors that are portable as well.

Thanks for your input, please comment on the actual items themselves if you can!
