I'll try to explain it well, english is not really easy for me (spanish native).
Well I have this laptop MSI GX640 and I bought it refurbished on April 17 2011. I think that warranty last 3 months (not sure) and since i received that the GPU came death, i mean that it works, it turns on and show desktop, but GPU don't run games, even more graphic poor games :(. I take it to somebody that is genius on hardware and he culdn't do anything, I'm from Chile and here GX640 is not selling, I bought it on ebay (USA) to mobo_outlet and they didn't give me any solution. So one friend is going to USA next week and I'm thinking to give her my laptop, but I don't know what to tell her to do, so I need some support please, some help to guide me and tell here you have to do this, this and this; and if is possible to give her the money that it will cost. Please try to help me, and sorry my bad english, but i think is understandable??

    Hi,

Can you monitor your GPU temperature?
Also, have you updated the GPU drivers? Does it install normally?

And be more specific: what happens when you run a game? A game crashes/doesn't start, computer halts, you get blue screen, screen flashes/goes black, you must restart system or it just returns to desktop?

Try running some GPU testing software (3D Mark or something similar).

    Report here how it goes.

If the graphics card is dead, you can replace it in your machine.

When I received that laptop, it cames with catalyst 10.4 and oviously the first thing I did was install a game (assassins creed 2), when I starter it, the game crashes after game menu, so I install Need for Speed Shift, and the same thing. Then I format and install driver 11.4 and the same. Then I format again and couldn't install any driver because when i turned on the laptop for see if the driver was installed it showed the desktop flashing intermittently and then BSOD. Here i take the laptop to this guy who knows a lot of hardware (GPU, motherboards, CPU, hardware) and he try lots of things (undervolting, thermal copound, vbios update, etc) and nothing, he told me the GPU is not working well and is not going to be well again :/. The funny thing is that I install Ubuntu and runs all good, except games, so i don't know really what is bad with the GPU. I want to tell to my friend to take it to USA and send it to MSI service, that's the only solution that I can see now, because here in Chile I'll not found GPU with mxm 3.0 b conectors, so I want to have ideas of what to do, and I think this is the right forum to give me some.

Sorry bad english, i do my best :(

    Matias

Sorry, the games didn't crashes, they becomed black screen and freeze, so I had to turn off laptop manually

Erm, you should have returned it the moment you received it if it was not working.

Have you tried swapping out your RAM? That might be the problem

There is a certain reseller of graphics cards who we know well here on the forums.
    He lives in Chile.
Perhaps you would want to meet and talk to him about upgrade/replacement options. http://forum.notebookreview.com/member.php?u=221447
Actually, PERHAPS he would just be willing to let you test a 6970m to check compatibility with this system, and to see if your 5850 is really dead.
