I am wary of heat issues because my old Dell XPS M1700 just died (7950 GTX Go) due to heat and I don't want another "problem" laptop.

I put an order in for the MSI GX640 from NCIX, but the item is back ordered.

After reading some threads here, it seems like there are some heat issues with this thing and while I have no major issues opening it up and applying some changes such as the ones Kosti posted here, I would rather not.

The primary game I will be playing on this is WoW, Star Craft 2, probably SW:TOR when it comes out and maybe some Fallout 3 New Vegas and Crysis 2 but it will mostly be a WoW machine especially after Catacylsm comes out. My brothers girl friend will also be playing WoW on it, for marathon sessions (4-6 hours).

Should heat issues disuade me from buying the laptop?

    How about the MSI 740?
How is this for heat? Any major issues? Any good "how to fix" posts like Kosti's thread I linked above?

While I prefer a 15" laptop, I would consider upgrading to a 17" if it is more reliable and because the MSI 740 is in stock and god knows when the 640 will come in. Plus I refuse to buy anything with less than a 1680x1050 resolution.

Can I purchase either of these two laptops with relative confidence they wont burn out on me within 3 years (or that easy fixes can be applied) or look for something else?

    Thanks for your advice.

They're notebooks, any good "laptop" will be to hot because your lap is blocking the air intake holes.

PS Don't worry, the guy abouve me is running a 820QM in his 640, so theres your answer ;P

From personal experience with my 740 (granted, the E740 as opposed to GX740 has an i5 CPU versus the GX's i7) that after hour-long gaming sessions in Crysis, the GPU under default fan speed, reaches a plateau at 92 C. When changing the GPU fan speed (easily done through ATI's Catalyst software) to 80%, I later saw it plateau at 75 C, which is very respectable. Idk what a 4-6 hour WoW session would do, but WoW is also less graphically intensive.

I haven't had any problems with heat in my GX740. Maxing out at 80 C after a couple hours of STALKER. I did install the latest VBIOS fix recently. Really helps the non-game cooling; 52 - 54 C (down from 64 -65 C).
