    hi all,
just got msi x410, the one with amd athlon neo 1.6ghz cpu.

i gagging to put xp on it (windows 7 currently on it), ive got the xp driver for the ati radeon x1250 graphics card, and thats all i need really, im not interested in the wifi or bluetooth, and getting the xp drivers for the realtek audio should not be too hard.

BUT, i am concerned about the SATA hdd, im told there are no xp sata drivers, and even if i had em, ive never had to install drivers for harddrives before, is it needed ?, hows it done ? ,im confused.

i just wanna wipe windows 7 off, format the hdd and install xp from scratch, if its possible ill do it, but if the sata hdd interface is gonna be the fly in the ointment, im not gonna try, but i do want xp installed.

    any tips much appreciated

    cheers

You need XP SP2 installation disk at least. Microsoft included SATA drivers with SP2.
One more thing you can try - you put the CD, start the installation process and if you need SATA drivers for it it will tell you that it can't detect the HDD. At this point of installation you'll still have your current OS untouched, so nothing to worry about. But if you see the part where it ask you where to install Windows, it means that it can detect your HDD. There is the point to stop with installation or to continue. Just be sure you have everything ready when you decide to continue after that point.
HERE are all the drivers you need for XP 32 bit.

    thanx for reply.
this info puts me at ease, im gonna bang xp on as soon as i get an external cd drive (or maybe try use an image of my xp sp2 disc on a flash drive ?).

again, thanx for info, much appreciated.

one quick ques, do you reckon the 'power now' xp drivers have to be installed, i always have 'power now' disabled in the bios (all it seems to do is reduce cpu grunt and adversly affect performance).

    cheers

I had desktop PC with AMD CPU and i didn't like the power saving options there, but I think it will be usefull for notebook, especially netbook. I really don't know about that on laptops, but you can test it always. Also did MSI put in their BIOS option to disable it? If it is present in BIOS you can leave it on and then through Windows you can turn it on/off also, but you need to install the driver first. To turn it on, you have to set your power plan to "Minimal Power Management". All other power plans you choose doesn't turn AMD's power savings on.

    hi,
i need to pick your brain once more !

just wondering if an external cd drive is gonna be picked up by bios when install xp off it, i say this cos in x410 bios there is no option for usb boot, but there is a legacy usb option enabled, will that do ?

i need to know really before i buy the usb cd drive (ive decided the usb flash drive xp install method is too complicated and fraught with potential pitfalls ?)
    cheers
