    Hey Guys,

I ordered the MSI gt783 with nice set of specs...I'm very excited to get it but i read that the LED Backlit 90% NTSC Color Gamut Glossy LCD (AUO B173HW01V4) is WAY BETTER than MATTE LED backlit Widescreen LCD.

Ok I spent alot on this laptop, so I do really want the best quality to last me the next 2 years or so.

As of now, I can have UPS return to sender and try to have powernotebooks swap out the screen (if they can) but I don't know is it worth it.

Can someone please advise me as to what to do?

    thanks in advance

I think it's more of a matter of personal preference but I much prefer the glossy display. Colors look washed out on matte type displays but if you are on your computer a lot around sunlight, then maybe a matte display would be better. I use my computer in my basement and at the firehouse 90% of the time, neither of which have windows I need to contend with so I was not about to sacrifice amazing color quality when 90% of the time, there are no windows around.

Movies also look better on glossy displays as well. I think the colors are more accurate.

I'm happy with my matte screen! no reflections, and I've learned a lesson because my 24" glossy desktop monitor was accidentally scratched! and I could do nothing about it, while the matte could be fixed in moments!

The stock matte screen is a very good screen and will serve it's purpose well unless you need to do on screen color correction in software programs.

Then the higher gamut will have some use but the screen and graphics card combination should be calibrated and an icc color profile created for the lighting conditions you will be viewing the screen under.

IMO,the extra money is better spent to improve the performance of the software you be running.

Color is very subjective as is beauty in the eye of the beholder.

Most beople like more saturated color and not true color.

You are 100% correct that people like eye popping unnatural color but I've always considered myself the type of person who likes natural colors which is why I've always used a Plasma in my home theater along with having it professionally calibrated. Just because the display has a glossy coating does not mean the picture it produces is unnatural. I'm sure you know that personal picture settings are what make a picture look natural or unnatural. Glossy displays inherently produce better contrast which is why they are the better choice for movies and games. Matte displays have a coating which diffuses light but it also diffuses the LCD's back light which causes a hazy washed out image in certain conditions. A glossy screens coating that allows light to freely pass through the filter without being diffused. As a result, colors remain bright and accurate in most all situations while blacks remain deeper.

Matte displays are more versatile and can be used in most all lighting situations which is why you mostly see them being used in office settings which contain a lot of florescent lighting and sometimes windows. In an environment where you can control the lighting, the glossy display will give you more accurate colors and better contrast.

In the end, it's all a matter of personal preference. I will personally trade reflections during 10% of my usage in order to achieve higher contrast and better color accuracy.

Well, I am buying a gaming laptop for that specific purpose. I really hated the notion when someone said matte display would look like washed out colors in comparison. I love vivid colors and eye popping displays so I guess I made the right decision to switch to glossy.

Nobody should tell anyone else how and where to spend their money.

There's a great deal of wrong information posted on forums that some people repeat over and over thinking it's true.

    My opinions:

Matte stock screen colors are good for gaming and most other tasks that the notebook was intended for.Good picture mostly alot on content displayed and properly calibrated monitor.Color can be adjusted in Windows color management. The 90% gamut screen is good but not needed for gaming. It's a good choice as a upgrade for anyone running color correction software like lightroom and photoshop.

The Intel 510 SSD:Far from the best bang for the buck.
PCMark Vantage HDD Suite simply provides evaluation results based on transfer speeds reached through typical user patterns. Vantage provides a better testing medium, in that, it sees through the typical synthetic benchmarks and provides us with ‘true to life’ results of the drive.

A customized GT783-658 is a better choice than the GT783-625

DDR3-1600 and DDR3-1866 are complete wastes of money.

IC Diamond is good but equal to many other TCs.The stock MX-2 is a good quality TC.

Yea, I think the 90% gamut is a waste of money unless like you said, do photo/video editing. When I ordered from Gentech, they had a $35 upgrade option for a 75% color gamut glossy display. I don't doubt that the matte display is good for gaming or other notebook tasks (which change from user to user) but what is not a opinion is that glossy displays achieve better contrast and more natural colors which is what makes them a popular choice for people gaming or watching movies. What is also fact is that matte displays are more versatile and can be used in a variety of lighting conditions which makes them the better choice if you use your computer in areas where you can't control the lighting most of the time. Some people think matte looks better and others think glossy looks better. It's just personal preference. Bottom line, when comparing two displays (all things being equal except for the coating) the glossy display will always have better color saturation and a higher contrast ration.

I agree 100%. If you don't need to contend with sunlight a lot. There is no reason not to spend the measly $35 for better color saturation and a higher contrast ratio.

Why do you say that? about the customized 658 better than 625.

Ok I can switch to OCZ Vertex 3 240GB SATA III Sandforce Solid-State Drive for 150 more...Upgrade from my intel 510 ssd...is that a huge noticeable difference in performance?

Also how good is Patriot Wildfire 240GB SATA III Sandforce w/3x NAND Solid-State Drive in comparison to ocz vertex?

The best way I can describe the matte screen is it is a bit dimmer than the glossy equivalent and a lot like having a hazy film in front of the screen. It is also a lot harder to clean. The closer you are to the screen the more you notice how it is being degraded by the filmy finish.

If the stock screen was a glossy type there would be a like number of owners complaining about it and wanting to replace it with a matte screen as evidenced by forum posts about different models before matte became stock.

    Such is life on forums.

I can live comfortably with a matte or with a glossy;both have their pros and cons.

Could anyone take a picture of what a 90% screen looks like? I just got my PowerPro R 12:17 a few days ago. I'm really disappointed with the matte screen and am seriously considering sending it back for an upgrade, but I'd really like to see what I'd be getting.

I had glossy with the M18 and now I have matte on the MSi - I can honestly say I dig the matte over the glossy. I don't need to be in sunlight to see the benefit of light reflection reduction...and for the times I am in sunlight, it's a godsend.
