Hello this is the first time i have ever posted anything ever! so i would like a bit of patients if my lingo isnt all there thanks. last year i bought the msi gt680r so far it's been a great machine for me. I upgraded the ram to 16gb and the hard drive to 2X 512gb SSD crucial 4 drives in a raid0. Just outstanding! I work overseas supporting our troops and in my down time i like playing the games. I'm coming back to the states for r&r and i have the original gtx460m 1.5GB ddr5 that came with the msi gt680r, and i'm looking to max out my graphic possibilities when i get back i was looking at the gtx670m 3GB ddr5 and the gtx680m 4GB ddr5. Can i use these or will they work with the msi gt680r, and will this be a simple plug and play with say a bios and driver update. Could some one give me a "NO BULL" assesment of the situation. and if they whon't work what is the best upgrade i can get for it that is known to work at this point thank you for any knowlege.

    Sincerely
    Jnovack

How many W is your current power adapter rated at? Just multiply the voltage with the amp listed on the power adapter sticker. If it's lower than 180W, you might want to look for a higher W power brick first.

And if I remember, MSI always uses standard MXM structure, the one in your MSI is probably rate at 75W, but putting a 100W card in it is possible. So there's hope for it.

Thank you in my field i am familiar with OHMS LAW and did some checking on my power supply it is the 150W model ADP/150NB D i noticed that the newer model gt683 is sporting the gtx679m with the 180W power supply. does any body know if there is a difference on the motherboard itself as far as delivering more power to the gpu i assume that it would be similar too a desktop version were you can swop graphics cards and have to compensate the power requirements as need with a bigger power supply.

I've got a gt680R with a 570m in it that I'm running no problem with the 150W adapter. The 570m is the same card as the 670m with a different vbios, so you won't have any problem running it. Once you get into anything higher you may want to get a bigger power supply, since that is what really is supplying your card with the power. I'm trying to find a motherboard for mine so I can upgrade it to the SteelSeries keyboard. Haven't had any luck tho

Thank you very much you guys have been a great help and now that i understand this "posting thing" i'll be following you guy's a lot more. by the way Xonar was a great help on another post with this info.

Edit:Just to let you know, the 16F2/680(3) have been confirmed to work with:

    nVidia: 460/560/570/580/670/675M
    AMD: 5870/6970/6990/7970M

Oh, and the 680M is about to be tested. It'll almost certainly work with a MSI vBIOS.
I'd say that's quite an extensive list.
