I am not sure where to post this, but I would imagine many other users of the MSI gaming laptops have had this problem with Windows 8.1

I own a MSI GT70, which came bundled with the GTX 780M.

With this configuration, I could always get the laptop to recognise both my Samsung LCD TV, and the in-built display of the laptop. The issue that I used to have was the HDMI audio not being recogniised unless I restarted with LCD turned on, or unplugged-replugged HDMi cable. Annoying, but I could live with this.

I have very recently 'upgraded' my GTX 780M, to a GTX 980M, which required either Bios flashes and/or modded drivers. However, I have had the HDMI audio working through my laptop, and to my LCD TV since I installed the new card. However, when I turn off the laptop, and/or disconnected the HDMI cable, getting the audio back has proven a much greater hassle.

With this in mind, I decided that it might be best to do a fresh Windows 8.1 install. However, since having done that, in addition to a whole other catalogue of headaches, I now cannot get Windows to recognise my HDMi audio output at all. It is driving me mental. Also, I can't get my display adapter to recognise both my displays. If If I hook up HDMi cable to laptop after Windows is loaded, I get an extended desktop, starting on my LCD, and ending on my laptop. If I restart, then the Intel graphics control centre only recognises and only displays on my Samsung Monitor.

Since I have actually witnessed my new configuration working exactly as I want it to work, II know that this must be some kind of driver bug.....I will be damned if I can figure out what it is though.....at least I haven't managed in the last 12 hours straight at any rate.

Anyone had similar issues that they managed to find a solution to? Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

I am posting this here, for the benfit of others who are carrying out unsupported GPU upgrades on thier MSI GT60/GT70s.

I had the above problems and other problems, after doing a clean install with the Clevo GTX 980M card installed in place of the MSI GTX 780M. Many people performing this sort of upgrade, may, like myself, simply flash the vBios and/or install the modded drivers and think that they are sorted......and they may well be, so long as they never have to do a fresh OS installation.

What I had to do to fix the irritating defects I describe in the post above, was remove the GTX980M, reinstall the GTX780M which I had fortunately not posted to the chap on ebay who has bought it, and a do a fresh Windows 8.1 install, and put all the MSI drives on, in the order that they recommend doing it. Then and only then, could I reinstall the Clevo GTX 980M, which I flashed to a MSI GTX 980M, and have everything work as it should (more or less). My HDMI functionality is still not perfect in that I can't have the cable hooked up from starting up the laptop, and have it function properly but I can live with that.

Had I not still had my original card, and been able to load up all the original MSI drivers, then I would have been scunnered. Since this upgrade is not supported, if I ever need to do a fresh OS install on this laptop, then I will likely also be scunnered as the drivers will not exist to get everything working properly from a fresh install.

Therefore I am getting my laptop into a good base condition, and making a recovery image of the installation. I would suggest that others may want to consider this also.
