I was wondering if anyone could help me clarify some questions I have about this computer. I'm really close to buying it however I'm wondering if MSI is a good brand name compared to companies like dell, HP and Asus. (Ive been an Asus owner for the past year but need a better laptop for gaming). I was going to go for the g73jh at Best buy but the Gsod issues are scaring me away.

Is it worth spending more money going through gentech, or xoticpc for the professional IC thermal upgrade, and 6300 Intel wireless card. Then go for a stock model on newegg?

Is the performance good for the price ($1,399.99) $1,299.99 with rebate)?

yea MSI is a great brand, you will really enjoy your gx740. The advantages to buying from gentech or xotic is you will get amazing customer service, and they can change the components for you if needed. I definitely recommend you get the IC diamond, unless you know how to apply it yourself... Also, if a 16 inch notebook is okay with you, I would recommend the msi gx660r and it has a lot better cooling than the gx740 as well as usb 3.0, and awesome speakers...

It looks like a great computer but I don't want to compromise on the I5 core. I know there better for gaming due to the higher clock rate. But the I7 seems better for the money I'm spending.

Yea the i7 gx660r version will cost you 1600. For the price, the gx740 is an awesome buy. Also there is a 15 inch MSI thats exactly like the gx740, but even less expensive that you can look at also.

If i5 is all you need, then go for e7405.. But i recommend you to get the gx660 because of better cooling, usb 3.0, better screen, latest design and the dynaudio speakers

I'd avoid the Gx740. I owned one and the screen is awful compared to other laptops on the market, in my opinion. It's granny and the brightness of it is pretty disappointing, even on max setting. Just browsing the web was a big turn-off. If anything, grab the Asus or the MSI GT-series, with an HD screen, b/c if you've been through many laptops like I have, you'll be disappointed.

I'm being told two different things. I can't win. xD
I can't seem to find a better model around the same specs for the price.
The GTs don't really interest me as they dont have the 5870.

    Is the GX660 a 17 inch chasis with a 15.6 inch screen?

gx660 is a 16 inch chasis and screen which i would reccomend over the gx740 unless u really need/ want the i7. Both screens arn't too bad imo, maybe he had a bad screen.....
