My 5870 is hitting 105 degrees when playing MMOs. I have updated the GPU bios, and it didn't help. Should I apply new thermal paste? If so how hard is the process? Is the GPU and CPU heatsink connected? I already have some paste.

It looks like somebody applied thermal paste in a wrong way so you need to apply new one for sure. CPU and GPU have their separate heatsinks (cooled by one fan) and it is easy to take it off (be carefull anyway). Clean the heatspreaders on the end of heatpipes with compressed air or whatever just to make em clean.
You should have max temp reaching 85'C.

This is strongly recommended that you have to stop playing games until you do this, otherwise, you may brick your GPU for good, and they are not cheap :)

Alright one more question. I put new paste on and it seemed to help but it slowly made it's way to 103 instead of almost instantly hitting 105. I used manhattan paste because it was what i had. Do you think if I get a better quality paste there will be a difference? Also on the gpu the heat sink there was 2 strips that were around the edge that were on some chips. Should i remove those strips and use paste or leave them alone?

Also should I give this time to cure and see if it gets better?

buy some MX-3 or MX-4. also get some rubbing alcohol. take off the memory pads. redo the paste and you should see a massive drop.

i still own a gx740 and it hits 7x during gaming.

Ok so put a drop of paste on each of the memory chips?

yes, making sure theres enough on each chip. you might actually have to use quite a bit of paste on the memory. its worth it though, trust me.

I down clocked it to 900/600 until I get a cooling pad. Anyone know of a good one that feels good sitting on your legs in bed? I see a lot of you have Zalman coolers are they comfortable?

Zalmans NC3000S are the best ones around, both, in cooling and design. Antec makes nice ones as well. Make sure you get a sturdy one, not somethink cheap, becouse later....you'll regret it :D

And 900/600 - you mean 900 for Memory and 600 for GPU yes :D
