Haha, everyone is playing the "I'll wait until someone else tries it to see if it f%&#s up their system before I try it on my mine" game.

If no one else reports back by tomorrow morning I'll do it and let everyone know how it went.

I'm sure, there won't be any problems. ;)
I guess, I was one of the first 5870m owners, which had tested and used a powerplay-enabled vbios.

But I don't see any improvements in this new vBios till now.
With this there are only 6 clocksettings instead of 8. I think it's a cleanup of unused settings.

Nah, I just totally forgot about it. A few things surprised me IRL and took my free time away. I don't think I've even powered up that system since I made that post. I'll probably do it tonight/tomorrow morning.

So uh. I have a new GX 740-235. I've heard that there's a lot of problems with the vBIOS etc, and that I should go through various stepts to fix it.

Can anyone guide me on any software steps I can do? i.e. which bios to flash, where to get it, how to get it etc? I'm completely new at this :(

Just flashed my vBIOS, no trouble whatsoever.

It seems to be an under the hood update rather than something that jumps right out at the user, however, I haven't run any significant stability/temp/etc... tests.

Regardless, this one looks safe if you follow typical vBIOS flashing protocol.

Version for this vBIOS is: 12.020.000.042.035757

After running a few tests it appears that this vBIOS update negatively effects 3D performance. My 3DMark06 as well as my Vantage GPU scores dropped about 5% with no other changes made to my system other than the vBIOS update.

    Hi guys!

I need some help... I have a MSI E7405 and I am having some overheat issues mainly playing starcraft 2.

I saw on some threads that I should update my VBios... but I can´t find any real confirmation that my notebook model is the same as GX740...

Just for your info... the idle temp of my ATI 5870m is 67ºC... and playing I am getting 90+...

My system restarted 3 times by overheating issues...

    Tks for the help!

Well if the performance degradation is true, I would go for this vBIOS instead.

It's the one I'm currently using.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/6587366-post1299.html

With this BIOS and 10.11 drivers I idle at 40C with max temps about 76C at 835/1080 . Note it's no backplate and NC2000 cooler

    Nice!

I will try the VBios update today...

How can I update to this version of Catalyst u just said?

I tried to update once and lost my drivers... so I had to use the recover cd...

Now I´ve updated to the driver version available on MSI site and everything runs fine...

    Tks

go to the AMD site for drivers.
Note: Get the notebook ones, not desktop.

    Download and install driver sweeper.
run the new driver setup, then use it to uninstall old drivers. During the reboot, press f7 and reboot into safe mode. in safe mode, use driver sweeper to clean old drivers. Reboot normally and install new drivers. then reboot once again and you're set.

I do not understand how can a simplistic VBIOS update drop temps ?

    Just curious.

Previous video BIOS versions did not set idle clock speeds properly, hence temperatures that would otherwise be higher than they should.

The load temps decreasing is a result of lowered voltage (1.15V down to 1.05V)

Has anyone tried the BIOS not the VBIOS. My lap is GX740 with i7-720. I recently flashed both of them and right now the GPU is totally fine, it stays around 50C. The CPU is somehow ridiculously high, it idles around 70-73, and in games it can go up to 95, which never happened before. So I am wondering if it is the BIOS's problem?

The thing is before I flashed the BIOS, it is just around 60, but now it increased like 10

idle at 60? that's indicative of a bad paste. Mine idles between 36-42, and on load is only about 65

60 idle is hardly acceptable even for the 940xm.

i agree that this is a little high, and certainly reaching 95c in games is not a good thing, i would look at a little cleaning and re-application of paste :)

I have the gx640 and mine idles 60 and loads 85oC max on games and its perfectly fine. The i7 can easily handle 100oC, intel are designed to withstand heat as they usually run hot.

    ^ This

My max temps brush 80 only when using Prime95. My idle is about 48-52. 60 is a little high but well within the thermal capabilities of the 720qm. It certainly wouldn't hurt to clean the CPU and heatsink and re-apply some good quality thermal paste. It's not imperative, though.

I think I will first clean it and see how it goes, definitely thinking of re-apply the thermal paste. The thing that bothers me is that it used to be pretty good, never exceed 80 in games, and gpu always became like 85. Now things turn around, gpu never exceed 80 and cpu can be 95......

What´s the lowest voltage you can set? I used RBE to set 0.7v for idle, does it really work?

i would say setting it below 0.8v is probably not going to help the card, but thats what i have found that i get the occasional lock up when running at those speeds.
