It's ok, I really don't find it too loud. The fan only kicks in hard when the temps go crazy. Before it is not really hearable.

i got the gx740 for a few days now and tbh it is indeed not to loud untill i start playing a more demanding game. But then again, when im playing, im concentrated on the game so i do not realy notice it altho when someone is watching tv next to you it might be a bit bothersome for them.

My first laptop and i am very happy with it! Could not have bought a better one!
    Just my honest opinion :)

    Regards,

    Jim

If you really compare, then compared to MSi you'll realise that all other comparable gaming notebooks are louder ;)

I doubt the MSI models are quieter than the ASUS G73.

The MSI GT725 is by miles, the 740 won't be under furmark conditions but it will be under standard use,

Do you have any basis for that statement? The reviews I've read say that the ASUS G73 is very quiet.
    The best figures I can find are Notebookcheck's - G73; GT725.

Based on those, they're pretty much equal for light usage, but the G73 is quieter when you load the CPU and the GPU for something like gaming.

By comparison, the GX640 and GX740 seem quite loud.

Granted, Notebookcheck isn't the most reliable of sites, and noise testing is subject to a number of issues that need to be taken care of, but I don't think you'll find a noise comparison anywhere else.

I've heard both in person, the GPU fan on the 73 is also running faster by default then the cpu one (Because more heat from the power underneath the hood.)

The fans sound exactly the same in the 725 as it does in the 740 (granted my 725s have been used so possibly some wear results in it being even quieter),

The G73 is abnormally quiet though i'l give you that, but the 740 is very quiet too if its within decent thermal tolerance.

I'd have to give it to the 73 for gaming though, it seems to be quite consistant with noise where as temp fluctuations in the 740 could result in more fan stages.

In my experience with the GX640, which is quite close to the GX740, I'd call it loud compared to other laptops I've seen or used (it's my first experience with a gaming laptop, though), but then it also doesn't bother me at all.

With a 100/150 underclock for web browsing, the fan is still audible, but relatively quiet. When under high load for gaming at stock clocks, it heats up quite a bit and the fan gets very loud, but it still doesn't bother me.

However, I do use a pretty good pair of noise-isolating headphones with my laptop (Etymotic hf5). If you're really worried about noise, you can buy a good pair of isolating headphones, and you'll get a big improvement in sound quality compared to the stock speakers as well.

Hmm with the GT725, from start up or complete idling, i'd even give it near enough inaudible, quiter then a wisper, i think with some wear in the fans will become even quieter, the 640 was definately loud though because it was generating a fair amount of heat in the smaller chasis, the 740 in my opinion only runs quieter because its larger (more space to dissapate)

How does the GX740 screen compares to the G73? Does the 740 feels any smaller?
I'm about to buy a new comp, just cannot decide between G73 and Gx740. Have seen the G73 so far, but cannot find the 740 on display at any retailer in Australia...
I didn't really like the G73 keyboard and the size...
    decisions... hard decisions... ;)

GX740 has similar size screen (17inch), but it is overall a lot smaller than G73. If You happen to live in Sydney, You can have a look at mine :).
