I flashed according to the guide on the MSI website..

I still have not noticed any change whatsoever. Between the stock vBios, the beta vBios, and this new vBios, there have been no changes.

My clocks still don't change, sleep still doesn't work - EVER, no matter what. I've tried to force clocks with AMD GPU Clock, disable powerplay, make sure it isn't on power saver mode, etc. Sleep typically crashes the system (blue screen), or it just stays at a black screen.

Anything else I should try? Any way I can be certain that the flashing performed correctly?

Thanks for any help

Edit: When resuming from sleep mode, I am forced to physically remove the battery in order to restart the system, as it remains at the black screen and the power button does nothing.

Ok so I've made a bootable usb and put dos, Ec files and vbios files on the usb. What do I do exactly once I boot into dos? Do I just do eccall.bat or eccall and vbios.bat?

Ignore that i figured it out myself. And to anyone having trouble with wireless after ec update, you have to update to the latest bios(not vbios) and device manager will take care after a reboot. Be careful though, bios updating is risky bidness.

Would you know what the new bios and ec do, besides the auto-detect for wlan? And what did you flash first, the EC or the bios?

Ec, but ignore what I said and don't try the bios just yet. Flash the ec, then go into the bios and choose the load setup defaults option(something I forgot to do). If that doesn't work then you will need to do the new bios. I'm not sure what the ec does but I flashed it anyways.

After flashing the BIOS and the EC firmware, you're supposed to unplug the battery and the AC for at least 5 minutes. After that, you should go into the BIOS and load the default settings.

If you don't, the flashing might cause more bad than good, according to MSI.

Maybe I found the answer now!
One of the X7811 owners just had the same problem to idle at 405/1000 clocks.

We have tested and changed almost anything right now. Then I asked him for his profiles.xml and compared this to mine.
There I found something like settings for an external monitor.
So I asked him, if he has connected one. And yeah, he had one connected through vga port.
He should unplug it and look at the clock speed. And surprise. The card quickly downclocks to the idle state 100/150 (clockinfo 01). :p
He than also changed the clockinfo 06 to 100/150 in his vbios and sayed that everything is still working, also with connected monitor.

If I do a clean install of windows 7 ultimate, will it get rid of my updated gx640's vbios?

Sure not ;)
A bios is flashed to a chip (eeprom) permanently.

yep, the only way to "get rid" of it is to flash back to the original vbios.

hence the reason why flashing in dangerous, a bad flash and it could be bricked for good

Is it possible that this is a 5850 problem? I have considered changing clockinfo 06, too, but I'm waiting for a solution that would actually use all the clockinfos in the bios. So far I've only seen it use four of the 8 settings.

Anyway, do you think you can send me a copy of your profiles.xml and the profiles.xml of the other x7811 owner with the problem? Or maybe, post the relevant lines in this thread.

Thanks in advance.

I've just seen lot of following line:
<Cousin name="PCI_VEN_1002&DEV_68A0&SUBSYS_10541462&REV_00_4&36714C63&0&0018&02A" />

Clockinfo 06 seems to be the performance value while an external monitor or beamer is connencted. If you switch to battery optimized, clocks go down to 300/400 (clockinfo 05).
While playing, clocks goes to 700/1000 (625 at you) too, also with ext. monitor.
For me, the only unknown setting right now is the 400/400 (last clockinfo).

Imo it has something to do with the internal A/D-converter. Maybe it needs some kind of powered input through 405/1000.
Wth they have chosen 405 and not 400?
The other user changed btw the setting of clockinfo 06 to 100/150 too.
No probs till now.

I have that line, too, but I've never connected an external display to my laptop. That might be the laptop's LCD display.

As far as I can tell, the only clocks being used are:

clockinfo 00 625/[email protected] default/maximized battery at load
clockinfo 03 500/[email protected] youtube and other similar stuff
clockinfo 05 300/[email protected] maximized battery life at any load
clockinfo 06 405/[email protected] maximized performance at idle or minimal load

clockinfo 01, 02, 04, and 07 aren't being used at all.

EDIT: I'm not really concerned with the 405/1000 clock at maximized performance setting in idle. I can live with that. Having the maximized performance go down to 100/150 on idle will be pointless if at the slightest exertion, the card ramps up to 625/1000. What I want to happen is when I'm using maximized battery mode, I want the clocks to go down to 100/150 when idle then ramp up to 300/400 on load.

You can try to delete your profiles.xml in failsafe mode.
I haven't any line with a "Cousin"-tag.

The clocks won't ramp up to 625/1000 on desktop!
Only at starting a game or furmark or some other 3d-thing and imo while booting.

Whoops! my bad. I don't have anything with the "cousin" tag. I was looking at the "PCI_VEN....etc." part.

Anyway, I suppose flashing is my best bet to get those clocks to 100/150. I'm just curious as to why ATI has all those other clockinfo settings but don't use them at all. Anyway, thanks for the input.

As I said earlier, those other clockinfo settings are used but only when an external monitor is connected.
When I plug an external monitor, AND I choose to only output to it, PowerPlay downclocks to 100/150... even in performance mode !!!

But WHY those clocks are not used when th laptop screen is on ??? I really don't understand that part...

Didn't saw that you said that.
And what are the clocks, if you unplug the external monitor?
Maybe the analogue/digital converter just uses the clockinfo 06. No compromise there.

It's maybe the same thing, why other notebooks need to use the discrete graphics card when throwing the picture to external screen devices, while there is also a IGP there.

If I unplug the monitor, the laptop screen powers on, and the clocks change to 405/1000 or to 300/400 depending on the PowerPlay mode.

ok so I made a bootable usb drive....and moved over the files there but how do i actually flash? I've tried the vbios.bat and ecall.bat...it doesnt do anything and can't find decent information on it....im missing something

I tried to install the 10.6 drivers and after a few reboots all I get is a black screen. I know its the drivers/with the old bios causing it; after many uninstalls and reinstall. That's my main reason of updating. The drivers that come with it are outdated and cant run mw2 at all.. I really could use some help.

I'm on a 1656 that can't wake up from sleep. I know how to flash, but what zip do I need exactly? The vbios linked to at the beginning of this thread has atiflash.exe in it - ie for an ATI graphics card? Because I have an nvidia geforce GTS 250M. Do I perhaps need the actual bios? Or is my problem different altogether?

[yes, by "actual bios" I meant motherboard bios. Poor choice of words. But in general:]

I'm talking about whatever will fix the wakeup from sleep problem. This is my understanding:
-There is a known problem with GX640s that refuse to wake up from sleep.
-Said problem can be fixed by flashing the new vbios.
-I have a 1656, the barebones version of the GX640, so I should be able to use the same fix, except I have a different graphics card, so flashing that vbios would probably be pretty dumb.

Feel free to correct me if any of that is mistaken.
Point is, I'm looking for suggestions as to how to fix the problem - be that a motherboard bios update or anything else.

On closer inspection, MSI's website takes me to the GT640 software page when I click through to downloads for my model. Unfortunately there's very little information about it on the net, and none of the updates mention any sleep-related fixes. I'd rather not do any unnecessary flashing.

Thanks for your time

I would try flashing the motherboard bio as a first step. Next I'd try different drivers from nvidia. I dont know where to find a bios for the card you have since its not oem. I know I had that issue with the 5850 before I flashed and the vbios fixed it.

are these values correct for new vbios?

Thanks. but I really still can't find any changes. GPUZ and catalyst show me default clockes in game/reading/browsing (625/1000, power play off and 405/1000 with pp on, pp in max performance mode; in max battery mode - 300/400 or smth like that). Eco modes don't give any changes too. I also made a reinstall of ATI catalyst... I am noob

ECO modes are just regular Windows power plans. You can create your customs plans, give them names, etc. That's all ECO does. Beyond that, it's marketing drivel.

The only plans I need are High Performance for gaming and Power Saver when I'm on battery. Cinema Pro is also BS. All it does is set your screen's brightness all the way up. The point is ECO doesn't toy with GPU clocks or voltage. That, you have to do manually.

it seems to be ok but is it enough 100/150 to watch big video files BD, HD (>30gb)? it changes to 500/1000 while youtube but doesn't change while watching video (using Kmplayer, vlc)

That's because KMPlayer and VLC aren't using hardware acceleration. Try updating VLC to the latest version and enabling GPU decoding in the options. Splash Lite also supports hardware acceleration on some video formats, including h.264 files.

It's pretty good, but the options are limited, it's not updated very often, there's no tech support with Mirillis unless you're a paying customer and on top of that, there are some nasty glitches with about 2-3% of my files.

Most will play without a hiccup, but for some of them, Splash will display the wrong aspect ratio in full screen mode, the image will freeze but the sound will keep playing, their codec bank doesn't support mono audio and so on. They use their own proprietary codecs for decoding H.264 video and XviD/DivX. VLC uses libavcodec, which is constantly being updated.

My verdict is that Splash is good, but I'd keep VLC around for those glitchy files.

Hi there! First time poster and a fresh member of the owner's club but don't let that alarm you. :) I flashed the vBIOS several times today using the same method...

It looks like you're trying this from a wrong directory.

Like GapItLykAMaori said in his post
http://forum.not ebookreview.com/6688650-post2161.html
the flashing utility can be located in either a:, b: or c: depending on which USB port you're connected to.

In order to flash the BIOS you need to be in the same directory as "atiflash.exe". so type either "b:" or "c:" (and of course "dir /w" to browse the files) to get to the correct directory and once you're there type "vbios.bat" to flash the BIOS.
Mind you, this will flash the BIOS called "BR35701.030". In case you want to flash a bios with a different name you need to modify "vbios.bat" accordingly i.e. right-click -> edit in Windows and change the last word of the line to match the name of the BIOS you want to flash. Or alternatively you could just call "atiflash.exe -p 0 -f [BIOSname]" in the DOS prompt instead of "vbios.bat".
