I realize the 683 and 780 are just a few weeks away...but needed a new machine pretty much immediately...so made the leap and ordered the 680 today.

Has anyone tried getting a 6970m to work in these yet? Not feeling any urgent need to try it, but would like to know what options there are down the road.

BTW - Big thanks to Ken at Gentech for a refreshing customer service experience. He went the extra mile to get me Saturday delivery on the 680...very nice guy and his efforts are very much appreciated. Considering the absolute nightmare I've been living through with Dell/Alienware over the last month, couldn't be happier with Ken's hospitality today.

That's good to know he was willing to help! I have been eyeing the 780 myself. I will def go through Gentech if i decide to upgrade from my 1722.

Ken is the best, I bought my laptop from Gentech he was great.

Back to the topic, I don't see any reason why a 6970m wouldn't work considering it seems MSI doesn't know the meaning of whitelisting, although you'd likely need a new (or mod) your heatsink.

Thanks for the input, fellas. Not surprised to hear others who have had great experiences with Ken. Wish more retailers were that considerate.

I read the thread about the 6970 working in the 660 (or at least trying)...was hopeful that there would be an upgrade path in the 680 also. Hopefully, if/when the time comes, I can locate a 6970m complete with heatsink so I don't have to bother with modding an existing one.

    Thanks again for your time.

It is positive taht 6970M works in GT680. What you need to do is mod the heatsink and driver. Don't worry about the problem of heatsink fitting, it can fit almost perfectly with the 6970M.
