Ok guys![]()
Well I saw a gx630 from ebay and it was a non working one, I bought it for $150 USD 4 weeks ago, I wanted the media bar, the dvd drive and perhaps the 9600gt mxm card to sell it later...
It took 4 long weeks to arrive! but it arrived today, the pieces I wanted worked perfectly the mxm card was working (I tested it with my other gateway laptop) so I thought Ill list it this night at notebookreview and get some extra cash...
Ok I was ubber happy it couldnt be better my fully modded almost PERFECT laptop WAS COMPLETE NOW!
Then I was preparing the post to sell the 9600gt I went to dinner and suspended my laptop.
When I got back I turned the laptop on and the devil shows his damned face... I got a black screen... I knew something was wrong with the video card.
I quickly turned off my laptop and restarted it and it DIDNT POST! MY HD 3870 DIED  I couldnt believe it! this was supposed to be a great day for me and turned out to be a sad day...
I had to install my "new" 9600gt no extra money for me.
The temps of the HD 3870 were more than PERFECT never went higher than 82C it used to iddle @ 42C. What was wrong? I dont know.
But if you are trying to upgrade your msi with a mxm III card that is not a 9800gs or the 160m think it twice!.
Pretty F%$#ed up isnt it?
lmao:cry:

If I was close by I would hug you...
A video card dying will always ruin your day, or week, or month even.
What are the chances eh? -
mmm hard to feel bad for people that over overclock their gpu's. I'll give you 10$ for it

i doubt it was the oc that killed it since temps were good. I am sure it was bad when he got it but took a while before it really died. Now if my 4850 would to die, you can guarantee I would find someone to die with it, lol.
-
that was A BRAND new card from alienware. i fully tested it the card was not bad...
-
Time to bake it in the oven..
-
one of my panels died in one of my 1651's this week. half the screen went grey.. time for me to move on to a newer system i think

Also, I don't think it's common for cards to just die without any signs at all. Usually people get some problems or issues before the card completely goes down.
-
I CAPTAIN ALWAYS GOES DOWN WITH HIS....GPU...
lol
Its a shame, it was overclocked nicely (3870 that is) and it seemed like it would last a nice long time lol.
Sorry to hear that had happened. -

Baking wont help this one. But check the capacitors and resistors, maybe one is dead and you can swap it out. I know you have some great skills with those kinds of things
-
anytime you are overclocking the cards you are taking a chance with them. even if you think its safe and even if you only oc a tiny bit there is always a risk there. i have learned this over the years. do i still oc.. of course. but i do know there is a chance one day my gpu or cpu may not work one day when i go to use the system, been there done that though it has been VERY rare it does happen
-
I think overclocking the core and shaders is fine for laptops, but there is no way to monitor the memory, and they don't have proper contact like the core. Just those cheap thermal pads.
-
Especially for those who goes above the default clocks. Like they say , **** Happens ! It's a risk (in the long term) , when it does happen you can't really complain as it's your own fault.
I Feel for you but that's the cruel reality of life. -
**** happens people lmao Im not mad, to be honest Im not really happy but Im laughing lmao come on it died the same day I got "an extra replacement"... At least I still have a fully working laptop
.
, it was my fault 100% lol
.
But I had to admit that call of duty mw2 was beautiful with that card...
Time to sell it or do sum tests!!! I have a whole university laboratory that could help hehehehehe I could even replace almost every piece of the card, Why should I worry about? -
Lol haha, fix the card, then make it even better in your mad lab!..
I definately agree, COD worked well with ATI for sure! -

I can confirm MSI also has the temps in GPU-z (Just like darths!)
-
This is not related about memory Im sure of that... -
I believe it'l end up being the core to be honest.
Curious, does the machine store voltage profiles for cards? say cmos related?
Could it ever be possible that switching the cards out, without ripping the cmos battery mix settings? (Btw, i have apserlutely 0 knowledge in this area) ^^. lol -
Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
btw, how long did you have it installed and running?
-
, maybe a driver issue the interesting thing here is that the card died when I suspended the laptop
...
-
Odd, i get hwmonitor gliches with my 4850 now ^^, i have two 4850s apparently...LOL
-
I will think it carefully, but I guess Ill have to sell the laptop heatsink and perhaps the dead HD3870 (Who knows maybe someone will be interested... Maybe an Alienware owner with evil warranty intentions
)
-
i call the heatsink lol
-
. What about 30 USD for it? It is like new
.
-
Darth Bane Dark Lord of the Sith
hwmontior doesn't even show my 4850 temps, but gpuz and everest does. Are you sure the 3870 is 100% dead?

If it works Im gonna $!$!#"$#"!$ the whole $#%$#"! dayhahaha.

can you try an external monitor maybe? Maybe if you're lucky, it's lcd screen's fault.... not likely though.
-
Will post my results soon. Thanks guys!!!! -
Thanks for the rep , leave it like 10mins before putting everything back together(power cord and main battery off aswell). We'll be waiting -
it better be $30 usd shipped? lol but gl with it.
-
No luck guys no love at all
, I dont know why but I feel that the HD 3870 is somehow working, it only will not post on my laptop!. I wish I could have another way to test it...
-
Have you tried bane's suggestion ? are you 100% sure it's the GPU ? could be something else ..
-

I have an opportunity to get a crossfire set of 3870s. Are there any differences between the slave and master card?
-
-
EDIT : these are the temps after 30 mins of GTA4. Since the re pasting of my GPU , I can finally set the clock to 550/900 , 1hr of furmark burn-in stress with max temps of 70... not bad at allno room heating by the way.
I'm not using any pads on the GPU mem etc , only compound.
Time to give Mobility Modder a 2nd chanceAttached Files:

No reason to panic , I just found out that older card isn't supported in Hwinfo32
, try Cpuid Hardware Monitor for GPU temps , also I doubt older cards have mem sensors etc.
These are for my Studio15 according to HWinfo & CPUID HM.
Any good app to stress the GPU ? apart from furmarkAttached Files:

not panicking at all, just don't believe the app provided really reads the temps correctly.
-
Ok guys Im trying to get this thing back to life I think that the capacitors are burned so Ill try to fix it next week

This guy replaced capacitors on his GPU, might be interesting for you:

Also if it doesn't work, there is a guy in the marketplace looking for a dead GPU like yours. -
Keep an eye on the northbridge.
-
Thanks ! I had it on my Ext. hdd but never thought about using it .. it's better than all the crap I've used yesterday
Anyway , survived 1hr without issues
3Dmark06 - 11376
PcMarkVantage - p9650
passmark performance - 1584.2
All seems stable .. i'm done testing , time to hit some games
Good luck and bad luck mixed, Isnt this funny?
