Okay guys, so I've been having this for a while now, well here's how it is:
When I got the laptop for like the first 2 months the laptop worked great, I used to get like 120-200fps with max settings in my games, really never went below 90fps.
Well, while ago I just noticed while gaming, that the same game had started to lag sometimes, FPS is sometimes up in 90 but most of the time it's around about 50fps. I haven't touched any settings or anything.
I tried upgrading my graphics card driver, but didn't work at all. I reinstalled the game, didn't work. Did default settings for the ATI Catalyst Control Center, didn't work.
Today, I noticed how it was in my opinion, even worse. The fps was around 30-50 sometimes even 20 (never gone that low). I put lower Anti-Aliasing and Resolution to minimum, didn't do anything at all.
What is up with it? (It can't really be heat or anything, since I just turned on my PC and it's always really cool, never heated up that bad..)
Thanks a lot for everyone helping me out!
(Some info of the laptop if needed it has: ATI Mobility Radeon 5870, i5-450M CPU by Intel, 4gb of DDR3 ram and 500GB 7200 RPM HDD, not sure about the maker of the HDD)

Well, when I start up the PC and I try to click those F1-F12 keys that go to BIOS and to restarting menu it simply does nothing. It doesn't react at all to my commands while starting up, this is weird too. Forgot to mention about it.
Why is this too? -
now to go to bios...Fn keys r not the only buttons...its a catchy ything which only msi can tell u..contact them....
combinations differ formanufacturer wise, motherboard wise..however try repeatedly pressin "del" or "home" or "f1/f2 alternately fast" or "f1/f12" or "f2/f12"...if these works..else contact msi
good luck! -
200Fps in what games exactly ?
I hardly see you gaining that FPS in games like company of heroes and Napoleon total war for instance.
Left 4 Dead however ......
Sounds normal try a 3dmark test and compare it to your last test. -
Call of Duty 4 is the game that I play most of the time...
And well, 200 was the highest that I got (rarely), usually what I had however was about 110 fps or 90fps. But now I'm usually getting like 50fps which is much lower and the games aren't playable so well anymore as they used to be.
But I guess I could try out 3dmark -
You got V=sync on ?
-
Anyhow ran 3dMark06, the results were not so pleasing...
I ran the free version of it (1280x1024), with that notebookcheck.com got 12403 points, every MSI GX740 benchmarks that I have found have been 12 000 and higher.
But what I got was only 6675, which is really much lower than that, what is up with it?
(I could try running 3dVantage too later..)
EDIT: The notebookcheck.coms GX740 wasn't i5-450M it's Intel Core i7 720QM 1.6 GHz, but could it really do such an big difference?
EDIT2: It gave this kind of information about the graphics card by the way:
Graphics Card - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870
# of cards - 1
SLI / CrossFire - Off
Memory - 0 MB
Core clock - 0 MHz
Memory clock - 0 MHz
Driver name - ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870
Driver version - 8.732.0.0
Driver status - FM Approved
EDIT 2: Okay, tried now with 3dMarkVantage, my results are here: http://3dmark.com/3dmv/2816004;jses...mv/2816004?key=9BDdEHfPQ3taYjzSUc0fhbMV0JCTMd
Searched people with the exact same CPU and Graphics card and they again had much better scores, for example: http://3dmark.com/3dmv/2762142 and http://3dmark.com/3dmv/2666144 (The second one is a MSI GX740) -

V-Sync limits the frames your GPU renders to the refresh rate of your screen. In your case, if you had V-sync on, it would be limited to 60fps. V-sync is usually a good thing, since it keeps your GPU from rendering frames that you wouldn't see, anyway, and reduces the load on it.
But your scores are really puzzling. It almost seems like you're not getting full clocks out of your GPU. Hmm.
Install a program like MSI afterburner, and enable on-screen display with fps, clocks, and temperatures. See what happens when you game. -
What seems really strange to me is your CPU score. It's less than 1/2 of mine, yet we have the same exact processor and model of system. -
how to use msi afterburner?how do i know which is optimum when i drag the coreclock cursor??
also which config do u think will perform better in games?
i5 430+hd5870?
i7 740+gtx460m? -
-
Tests help or lets say let us know if his system is under performing in this case it is something is up however nothing seems to add up.......
6k is low however at first i was thinking wait he has got it on some kind of saving mode however i seem to remember the 740 down clocks when idle so .......
In this case i really dont know lets try and work some more stuff out before making wild assumptions. -

Interesting, I installed two programs, some SpeedUpMyPC that deleted things slowing down my pc and one another program, that found out what drivers I haven't updated yet. It found like 28 drivers to update and the other program found a lot of things too.
Now that I run those, my 3dMark06 gave me 11826 points whilst before I got only 6675.
I'll run 3dMarkVantage later, to compare my differences now between it.
Rather weird, wonder what caused this...
Oh, and people suggesting Delete key, nope doesn't work either in the start. Or atleast didn't work before, might work now...
Thanks a lot for everyone for your help! I'll still check out other stuff you mentioned about. Thanks again! -
Sorry i may of misread 28 DRIVERS ................LOL
-
thats more than in a grand prix LOL

But it seems you're on the way to fixing the problem. -
I had updated every single driver that was given in MSIs websites (they've got the newest drivers uploads there) and still, 28 drivers...
Oh, by the way, would anyone know why I can't change the graphic cards clocking settings (overdrive) in the Catalyst Control Center? (Of the ATI card) They can't be moved or touched at all... -
hope i m clr now.. -
You need to be on high performance to use overdrive , and click on the key icon to unlock it.
By the way , not every 740 will overclock the same ... You need to find your best frequencies by yourself ..
Increase by 10 increments and run OCCT to see how stable it is. -

Unless you've already fixed your FPS problem, that is.
For overclocking, just move the sliders around and hit apply. Game for a little bit. If you have artifacts or if you crash your overclock wasn't stable and thus you would need to lower it. -
