    Hi,

I bought the new GX740 a few weeks ago and love it, but the BIOS post time is just way to high! When I hit the power button it takes about 30 seconds before it starts reading from the Hard drive (when the "hit del to enter bios" screen becomes "starting Windows animation"). Booting Windows itself takes about 15 seconds after that (I changed the HDD to an Intel X-25 SSD). So a total boot time of 45 seconds. That is way too much! Just to avoid the obvious question; the BIOS post time was just as slow with the default 500GB harddisk.

Is there an updated BIOS version that fixes this problem?

    My model is: GX740-065NE
My bios version is: AMI E1727IMS.106 02/01/2010

run - msconfig - Advanced options - tick number of processors and set it to the maximum available.

Can also change the timeout , no GUI boot etc etc to speed up.

Changing boot device order can also improve speed.

    Your bios is the latest.

Dead, does changing proc number work? ive seen it but not dared to touch it :).

Also your bios may have a thing called fast boot (mine does) so deeply look around it, also if you still have the advanced tab, alt and insert should bring up advanced menus (Slightly more)

It did speed up my boot time but not much , it's safe so try it ;)

By the way , does your flash like 2 time before entering windows ? I hate that ! need to look for a fix (if there's any)

    Yeah man its really strange,

When the 4 dots complete the window and animations finnish, it flashes, and i think when i had vista it did right before it loaded, but i think TMM caused it (When it searches for like monitors i think.)

The problem is not boot time, that's quite fast at 15 seconds I think. The problem is the first 30 seconds after I power on the system, where is just sits there showing the bios screen with the "hit DEL to enter setup" message.
I have owned many PC's and newer seen a BIOS this slow to post (Power On Self Test).

There are no options in the bios for speeding up post, like "fast mem test" for example. The BIOS in this has very few options. No advanced settings at all. Yes mI tried to move the SDD to the top of the boot order. No speed change...

Hmm i have a fast boot option, this is strange, another thing that can slow things down is usb devices that are plugged in.

my GX640 was/is having the same boot problem (sits at MSi screen for 30 sec), I tried changing the number of cores ect, to no avail. I then unplugged all the USB devices I have hooked up (5+), and it indeed sailed through the BIOS post in about 2 seconds. So I have to say the delayed start was due to the BIOS discovering USB devices b4 handing off to W7.

    Ipods especially, machines hate them,

But anything with some form of memory that is pluggged into bios will slow it down,

    Sorry for tripple "g" lol.

Thank you guys! I tried unplugging my usb mouse and rebooted.

Boot time with no USB devices from power on to windows desktop: 22 seconds!!!!

The time from power on to starting windows screen was about 7 seconds, down from about 30.

Indeed it seems any attached USB devices makes the BIOS try to "install" or discover them at POST.

I tried swapping the standard MSI mouse that was bundled with the notebook for a Logitech M505 with USB unifying receiver, that I use on my desktop PC.

New boot time from power on: 30 second to windows desktop. 8 seconds slower than no devices attached, but 15 seconds faster than with the standard mouse.

I think I might buy me that new Logitech Anywhere MX - Darkfield mouse. Anyone else using that? Is the extra investment over the M505 worth it?
