    Hey Guys! :hi2:

    I finally upgraded my Akoya X7811 / GX740 with a AMD Radeon 7970m (Clevo HM Version) and a i7 920XM

Problem is: Everytime I stresstest my system (Furmark + Prime95) the 180W PSU shuts down and the battery drains (frequencies of 7970m turns down to battery mode)
my i7 is oc'ed to multiplier x18 on 4 cores, temps are OK, 7970 @stock

Any ideas ? I don't get it, is my system draining more then 180Watt ?

EDIT: And why the heck shows ThrottleStop everytime my PSU shuts down 720Watt ????

(sorry for my english, I'm german)

    Please Help ! :):hi2:

    Config:
    i7 920XM @2,8
    8GB Corsair 1333
    AMD Radeon HD 7970m
    Samsung 830 Series SSD 256GB
    HP 180W PSU

Power supply could be faulty. Have you tried turning down the OC - or reverting to stock frequencies - and then run your stress test?

It is possible if you are dual burning (p95 + furmark).

It break off to protect the PSU.

    found out the problem!

the hp psu have got 3 chords in the cable isolation, one of them is a control chord, that veryfies if you're running a HP laptop, I modded the plug of the psu to fit in my gx740.
Soldered a 20k resistor between 19V+ and the control cord - WOKRS

    Thank you :)
I opened the PSU and saw the "control" chip, every HP notebook is suited with this resistor in the power plug (notebook side), they want to make it difficult to third party psu manufactors.

    A little google helps :)

    Thanks for your answers :)

I also have a GX740 with 7970M and an i7-920XM, and a 180W PSU. Just out of curiosity, what are Your CPU and GPU temps under load? :) Do You overclock? If yes, to what values?
Have You done any cooling system mods?

my 920XM is OCed to 3,2ghz and under load at 89°C (very hot)
my 7970 is @stock load 82°C (A LOT cooler then my older 6970)

I added a lot of RAM coolers on my stock heatpipe, in future I will solder a copper sheet onto my heatpipe to maximise the size of it

and again: sorry for my language I'm just a stupid german :D

Lol you hardly sound that way. Anyone that can successfully pull off the mods you've made would not be considered stupid, either.

    How is that PSU working?

this one is a older pic, when my 6970m was built in.
I'll post new ones, when I'm back home, I'm on a holiday trip right now :)

I drilled a few more holes in my case too, especially over the fan

found this pic on facebook :D you can see my heatpipe upside down, the whole pipe is covered with little ram coolers :)

EDIT: And YES I replaced the cooling pads ;)

EDIT2: Yesterday my 7970M suddenly died!!!! But I revived it in my home oven (right word ? German: Backofen ;) ) 10minutes with 200°C and IT WORKS AGAIN :)
Before it died I had a lot of sudden black screens (since it was out of box) :( Now it works flawlessly

Thanks for the pictures, waiting for more.

Sorry to hear about Your 7970M, I hope it will work without further issues.

Here's a picture of my GPU cooling:

I am waiting for more heatsinks and Arctic Cooling Thermal Adhesive to arrive, so I can tweak my CPU cooling as well (i7-920XM seems to need it) :). I have an interesting little project in mind; once it's finished, I will post pictures here.

Those mods look awesome, im thinking about getting a 7970 for my GX740, Currently running a 920XM with 8gb ram a 120gb ssd used to run a 1tb drive too but my dvd slot seems to no longer detect anything tried several different caddies.
And the standard 5870m atm, the performance has seen its best days and would like alot more out of it so I don't have to buy a new one. Just not too sure where to start. Marecki_clf im in australia as well.

I bought my 7970M from a US Clevo reseller, R&J Tech. The card was supplied with Enduro enabled vBIOS and displayed no picture (laptop was booting to Windows though). I downloaded a Clevo vBIOS with Enduro disabled, performed a blind flash and voila! All good.

As promised, I'm sharing photos of my recent cooling overhaul of my GX740.

    Okay, here we go!

My laptop cooler: 2 x 120mm CoolerMaster fans connected to a variable current PSU, currently running at 7.5V:

My laptop's bottom side with panel on:

My laptop's bottom panel (I used a drill, a box cutter and a file to make the holes):

    Insides:

I used Arctic Cooling Thermal Adhesive to attach all the extra copper to stock heatsinks and heatpipes.

Extra copper on the CPU heatpipe is flush with the laptop's bottom panel. It lowers the CPU load temps by 10-15C, depending on the ambient temperature. It would not fit inside at all, so I cut holes in the panel. It doesn't limit the portability of the laptop (I use a Targus backpack with a separate laptop compartment to carry this thing around).

So that's it! Fun is over! No more room inside! ;)

    GPU performance in 3DMark Vantage:
    5870M OCed to 840/1100 ~9000
    7970M stock ~19000

    Both paired with i7-820QM.

Wow thats a massive improvement. would be the difference between chunky and silky smooth though. $480 for a 7970 isnt too bad either, would just need some thermal adhesive and copper fins.
Oh about the heatsink do you need a new one or just modify the current one? Also I think im still running stock bios should prob get a custom one before i go any further on anything too ey.

I modified the stock heatsinks. Stock BIOS is fine. You can probably buy a 7970M cheaper here, on NBR Marketplace. Anyway, If You decide to go on with the upgrade, I have all the necessary files, BIOSes, vBIOSes and what not. Just let me know, I can e-mail them to You.

Marecki_clf, nice mods! Let me ask you when you overclocked your stock 5870m did you add any alternate cooling or stock cooling?

Yes. All the copper on the GPU heatsink was added, when 5870M was in the laptop.
