    Hi everyone,

I bought a GX660R which came today, and it appears to have a constant high pitched noise as if it is constantly moving data or loading something. I'm wondering if this is just its general noise and that I've been spoilt with quieter laptops in the past or could there be something wrong?

Thanks very much in advance for any help given :)

Is this laptop used, and also what processor do you have in it?

Hi, it's the i7 740qm processor, it's used, 6 months old, in excellent condition. The guy I bought it off did a HDD format so it's a fresh new Windows 7 account.

It appears to sound like the it's coming from the left of the touchpad, which I think is where the hard drive is? It sounds like the hard drive is constantly reading/writing data.

Are you refering to the noise of the hdd motor? I have a GX660r and its always got a background noise from the two Hitachi 5400rpm HDD's. They are not as noisy as 7200 drives, but obviously not silent like what an ssd would be.

I think I can hear what your listening to, but Ive got to stick my head down to the touchpad to hear it! Old n deaf... Thats me :D

But generally speaking the noise from the cooling fan easily drowns out both HDD's

Yeah if it's directly under the touchpad or slightly to the left it's a HDD.

Check the SMART status of it, or run a longer drive scan if you feel the need, if it checks out ok, check for something that may be constantly using the drive, you said it's a fresh install though so there shouldn't be. You may have to change the drive. If you have 2 HDDs in it try simply swapping them and see if it helps. Failing that, try it on another computer if possible and see if it still makes the noise.

    Hope I helped.
