Hello, I received my new gx640 through Amazon today and have been having issues while gaming. The laptop runs beautifully while doing anything other than gaming. However, once I open a game and it loads, the screen turns black within minutes and the computer either freezes (GTA IV/COD5) or the program stops responding (Crysis). While I initially suspected that the graphics card may be overheating, CPUID Hardware Monitor informed me otherwise. When Crysis crashed, the GPU peaked at only 79 degrees. Could it possibly be a drivers issue or do I have a lemon?

Kind of off topic, but what exactly is a "lemon" laptop?

lemon means it came busted. sour i guess.

you probably want to RMA it. best to get a new laptop that works.

Have a look at the event viewer and tell us what happened right before Windows crashed. Was it a memory error, a driver conflict or something else? There's no way for us to tell.

Alright, so I had a look at the event log and here is the sequence of events.

So I tried flashing the latest bios, and that did not help. Here is the sequence of events during the crash:

    First, this application error:

Faulting application name: Crysis.exe, version: 1.1.1.6156, time stamp: 0x47d6d167
Faulting module name: KERNELBASE.dll, version: 6.1.7600.16385, time stamp: 0x4a5bdbdf
    Exception code: 0x0000087a
    Fault offset: 0x0000b727
    Faulting process id: 0x11d8
    Faulting application start time: 0x01cb0372045b52ea
    Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\Crytek\Crysis\Bin32\Crysis.exe
    Faulting module path: C:\\windows\syswow64\KERNELBASE.dll
    Report Id: d696c746-6f65-11df-9ba3-4061861fe12d

Then two seconds later this display error:

Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered.

    Followed shortly by this:

Faulting application name: Crysis.exe, version: 1.1.1.6156, time stamp: 0x47d6d167
Faulting module name: atidxx32.dll, version: 8.17.10.279, time stamp: 0x4be0d32e
    Exception code: 0xc0000005
    Fault offset: 0x00011dc8
    Faulting process id: 0x11d8
    Faulting application start time: 0x01cb0372045b52ea
    Faulting application path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Electronic Arts\Crytek\Crysis\Bin32\Crysis.exe
    Faulting module path: C:\windows\system32\atidxx32.dll
    Report Id: de15873e-6f65-11df-9ba3-4061861fe12d

I will try reinstalling the display drivers and I will let you guys know if that solves anything.

Make sure Crysis has the latest patch. Also, try running it in DX9 mode.
Right-click on the Crysis shortcut and go to Properties, and then on the target line add -dx9 and then click apply.

Looks like a video driver problem. Could be memory as well. Run memtest86+ if reinstalling the driver doesn't fix the issue.

I hate to break it to you, but I think your keyboard is broken as well.
