GX640 owners:
I realize this question calls for subjective rather than objective answers, but how flashy is the GX640 in real life? I've seen the pictures, both from MSI and from users here, and it's hard to tell just how gaudy the red trim is. Would I be embarrassed to bring a GX640 into a board meeting (as I would be to bring an Asus with their "Republic of Gamers" logo stamped on the lid)? Does it scream "gaming rig"?
Thanks in advance for your opinions.

I don't really think the red trim stands out that much. If anything, the speaker grille is probably the gaudiest part of the design.

No, it does not.
If you prefer a sleeker look (without the red), go with the barebones -
It would be fine as a business laptop, the numpad and metal scream business, and the trim compliments it.

It's a little flashier than standard business laptops but by no means it is nearly as embarassing as an alienware or asus republic of gamers laptop.
If anything screams gamer it's the keyboard. From the back though, it's perfectly fine for business situations.
The best professionally looking gaming machines would probably be the sagers (although the battery is crap and normally a little battery is needed in business) or maybe the sony vaio f, although the vaio is a big step down in performance -

Yes, I would also go with sager.
But if you do get the GX640, get the barebones version with the grey trim. -
Yes, I love the Sagers, but weight, battery life, and price all make the GX640 a better fit. I saw the barebones option, which I would definitely try, but it seems to add $300-400 to the final price for the same specs. If I were to spend that, I might as well get a Sager...

The barebones are great for being business books, definately look into them.

The standard GX640 case is a bit flashy, especially the red trim and speaker grill. My wife immediately commented on it upon seeing it.
It's not as bad as some other gaming rigs, but it definitely is not a business model from my point of view. -
For a business computer, I would tend to think that the GX640 is overkill. Most business apps, barring video and CAD apps, don't require powerful graphics cards. I also would consider the warranty. With MSI, and many other brands, you have to send your laptop to them for repair. Bigger companies like Dell and HP, often send repair techs to you. Just another thing to consider.

I don't think I meant he want a business notebook, but a gaming notebook that could be brought into business meetings without embarassment. IMO GX640's design isn't too bad in that regards, it's far from AW or Asus G series that just screams "Gaming Notebook".

yea, what he wants is a gaming notebook that can mascarade (sp?) as standard notebook in business meetings. Just try not to play crysis during the meeting because the fan noise will tip them off

Instant promotion!,
see 84CubsFan? this is a win-win situation.
Kickass computer that tells your corporate buddies that you're a dangerous ninja undercovering as a businessman with a touch of exoticness, because you just dont give a damn.
Or you can go Low-Pro with the barebones, with the more "conservative style" look
Enjoy! -
Now, where is the admin with the ban stick...

I bought the GX640 for business
Mainly because I wanted something with more than 768p.
And of course, and little bit of GPU love does not hurt. -
It's a lot of GPU love, and it burns hands if placed next to vent.
-
Hot GPU lovin' indeed.
-
-
I'm not saying it's insanely hot.. but its not comfortable to leave your hand there ( on the vent) -
The bottom doesn't get hot in my opinion. The palmrest does, though.
As for the vent. I'd be very worried if it DIDN'T get hot. The notebook uses about 100W under load. If this energy doesn't get dissipated out the vent.. I'd be very worried about whatever it DID get dissipated into. -
Putting heavy load on GX640 while sitting in a meeting on a hot summer day is the best way to irritate the person sitting right to you
You only have to aim the vent precisely.
This idea comes from bitter own experience when a presentation projector blowed all its heat straight into me - I had to make barricades out of booklets to avoid hot air. -
Well, next week I will be on site at a Corporate customer.
I will let you guys know if I get laughed at with my GX640. -
If anyone says anything, just be like
"You got some beef about my notebook?! You wanna fight? Cuz I guarantee imma be running with no lag on Street Fighter IV." -
Make sure they're looking at your laptop 1st. -
I use mine for work and customers are mostly impressed with its appearance. They're all clueless about hardware though and most laypeople never heard of MSI apparently. I just tell them that chances are one of their Dells or HPs are made by them.

My old Dell 1520/Hackintosh had the same insides as a mac pro, guess MSI makes those to!!! ;p
