Is it just me or does anyone else with a GX640 notice that the screen brightness, even when 100%, is not that bright. I compared it to my netbook and my friend's Vaio and the difference was staggering. I also remember my Gateway FX definitely had a brighter screen as well.

Netbooks normally are quite bright, sony vaio screens are amazing and the gateway would be the closest i take it?

From what i can tell msi screens are often darker then others .

The brightness is correct. I normally set it to 70% while surfing/office/movie and 100% while gaming.

I'm really referring to the intensity of the backlight. Apparently it's not just me who thinks the screen is dim. The notebookcheck.de guys also list the dim screen as a con. This, and the crazy fan noises are making me debate if I should return this and go for something else, something I hate to do since the gaming performance is insane.

From lower viewing angles, does anyone notice a static effect going on the screen?

The fan is really not that bad. I shouldn't complain too much about that because after all, this is a performance machine. I never owned a gaming rig that wasn't loud. My Gateway FX was loud, my Alienware m9700 was loud too.

Idling i found it to be much louder then my 1722 too, one thing its worth doing, if you've got a game and the machines powering through it, enable vsync as the extra frames on the game should bleed off and the GPU work alittle less.

Not sure, but lots of people here say that it's common for MSI laptops.

Reviews of the barebones model and the re-branded Akoya MSI both mention low brightness for the gx740 as well. It's one of the things holding me back from wanting to buy one.

I dunno, I find the screen just fine, I normaly keep it on 60% because it's too bright for me at 100%

The one thing I will say is that I find the power button to glow much brighter than I want it to

Had I wanted to get a 17" and pay $1350+ I would've gone with the ASUS G73 for sure, but I find the MSI GX640 to be a great compromise, with the much lower price point and better portability.

The BB version has a much poorer warranty, and the screen isn't the great one you get on the proper G73s, so I'd get one from TigerDirect with the 15% BCB if I was getting a G73.
