GX640 Downgrade Question

I have GX640 and my ati mobility 5850 is death and warranty is off. so I'm thinking on buying ati mobility 6650 (mxm 3.0a) but i dont know if it is compatible or not, what do you think?

if it is compatible, Do anyone have any tutorial or something detailed on how to replace that video card (including hardware and software changes)?

You might need some new thermal pads and a copper shim, but it will run a lot cooler if installed properly.

Also, if you question overclocking.... 6770m is about 25w, 5850 and 4870 is AT LEAST 50w... you have LOTS of headroom, and no more burning up 80c temps I'd imagine.

^ OK I don't know what you're talking about at this point. Type A cards work fine in the gx640, I have tested, and there are 55w type A cards like the quadro 2000m.

The 4870 is a very old card and you must admit than an overclocked 6770m would not reach 80c like that. The clocks are really not too far off and often cards can be overvolted, especially MXM cards.

You should know by now clocks and shaders are no comparison! You have 1900mhz ddr3 on 256 bit and the 6770m is 1600mhz gddr5 128 bit, yours has 800 pipelines and the 6770m only 480! Its insane to compare clockrates.

The performance is very close at stock clocks. Your OC would beat the 6770m because 3dmark06 has a lot of CPU bias and that result has a quad core CPU.

The specifications of MXM does not mean there is some kind of vBIOS command to stop functioning past 45w when overvolted! You are foolish to think this. Please note that the 6770m is 40nm and more efficient than the 55nm 4870, the performance is very close at stock, this means if given enough voltage the 6770m will beat the 4870 by miles and still not reach 80c.

I bought an HD 6990M and would never use an HD 6650m've tested it and I know that the performance is bad, is little better than a hd4670m

There are lots of different 6650m and 6770m, in this case, the benchmark shows clearly 6770m beats 4870. Overall they are equal.

Of course it is not worth 600$.

By the way, I sell MXM cards. So I wouldn't be saying this if I didn't know what I'm talking about! The benchmark speaks the truth. And much architecture has changed with 4000, 5000 and 6000. Your 4870 is NOT gddr5, it is NOT 40nm, there is a reason these things change!

The Clevo w870cu is not related, why do you bring up this nonsense? I know about what type A and type B is of course. Did you even know the MSI gx640 is the same as the gt640 sold with the MXM 3.0 A gts 250m? There is NO problem with type A! lol.

The point is, in the end, if you have a choice of 6770m for 60$ and 4870 for 100$ then 6770m is the best decision and the better buy.

Regardless of performance, its a very good deal, because you can resell to people with smaller type A systems.

In Call of Duty MW2, on medium, both cards score in the mid 40 FPS.

If you are not going to look at and comprehend the benchmarks, don't bother arguing.

You fail to realize the definition of equal, in regards to video cards.

The difference of 3 FPS is makes these card virtually identical. In some games the 4870 is slightly faster, in other games the 6770M is slightly faster. That is basically the definition of equal for video cards.

Take a look at Need for Speed Shift:

4870: 30.7 FPS
6770M: 42 FPS

Both cards are equal.

Also, remember that in most games, the CPU doesn't matter. MW2 is one of those games.

I'm starting to think you continue to argue because you can't bear the fact that a cheaper card performs as good as yours.

Dude , they're both in the same class, just a few places away from each other.

You're placing waay to much of your case on the placing in the ranking.

You're only looking at the ranking, check out the benchmarks. How many times do niff and I have to ask you? Read the benchmarks and realize they are equal.

It's like a guy saying his Mazda is faster than a Nissan, but he hasn't even looked at each cars specs or performance.

 

many people buy notebook to play battlefield 3, call of duty or Skyrim HD4870m these games is 20% to 50% better than HD6770m

 

All benchmarks on notebookcheck are based on stock GPU clocks. The 6770M can be OCed easily and safely to perform as good as the 4870M... The 4870M on the other hand doesn't have such a wide OC range, especially temp wise.

6990M is boss though and doesn't afraid of anything.

 

From the benchmarks that notebookcheck has, the 6770M doesn't need to be overclocked to match the 4870M.

Overclocking the 6770M results in a much faster video card vs. the 4870.

It doesn't matter if card A runs at 1000MHz and card B runs at 500MHz, card B could still be faster.

You keep bragging about your card, yet you post no evidence. You keep posting the same thing over and over again, and quite frankly, it's getting old.

Your video isn't much, it just shows a few games being run. Run 3DMark06 and report back the score. If it scores 10,000 points STOCK9not overclocked) then both the 6770M and 4870 are equal.

Make sure you post a screen shot of the score, with GPU-z in the background proving it's not overclocked.

Also, your CPU scores are raising your overall score significantly, it's OC'ed too (bus speed is 147mhz).
