Ordered the gx640 from xoticpc. I'm reading reviews from peeps and everyone is getting the stock cpu and ram. The upgraded to a 720qm and the supported 1333 4g ram. Concerned about the heat issue since the core pulls 45watts along with that 5850, small chassis, and there's just one vent. Battery life isn't a concern, just burning out the components. Yeah, 3 year warranty is a big plus, but burning my lap is a big minus![]()
Thanks,
Jayson

Hey Jaysonsd,
I haven't seen any reviews with the 720qm in it yet, but a few of the vendors said they were going to put a qm chip in it when they got the chance. I configured mine with the i5 540, which shouldn't draw any more power than the stock chip, so unfortunately my temp readings probably wont help you. -

Guys i'd like to inform you that LAPTOP's rarely exist anymore, and will inform you politely that this machine, should honestly not be used as a LAPTOP lol....
Only for normal tasks, but gaming, not reccomended unless you space your legs properly around the intake (S) -

Well I ordered mine with a 820qm. Should receive it in a week or so, I'll let you know how it goes.
EDIT: How do people even game on their laps? mouse on the palm rest? -

Actually i game on the mouse pad, and i game happily on my laptop, but it does get hot because i space my leg to the right and left sides of the machine with the bottom quite open hehe.

You sir, have created bizarre visual image in my head

The last time I gamed with a laptop on my lap was 199X. I tried it for a short bit on the "modern" laptop and its way to uncomfortable. It will be winter and every part of me would be freezing minus my lap that would be on fire. Other then that this will determine whether or not I purchase a gx640 or look elsewhere. Cant wait for temps!

It doesn't spend that much time on the lap, but it will. The concern was more in jest, hence the
.
I wanted a quad as I tend to multitask heavily with cpu/gpu intensive stuff. I'll stream a HD video through HDMI while I'm surfing the net in multiple windows, writing something in msword and play fallout3 in a window off to the side. My old m1330 couldn't handle it for very long. If I'm gonna spend 1100 on a new (unnecessary) laptop, I'd rather spend 1600 on a quad that can handle what I want... -
You duct tape the mousepad to your stomach( Beer bellies need not apply) and balance the laptop between yout legs!
How hard is that -

Its basically all due to size. Older laptops that didnt have the vents on the bottom were thick enough to have small fans placed vertically. Now everyone has to have super thin yet powerful notebooks and yet they complain about heat. Well I was fine with a little thicker bottom and not having to worry about using it on my lap. But then again being as though alot of laptops are no longer running around, and mostly staying on desks Im fine with vents on the bottom and not using my notebook as a laptop for gaming. Plus its more comfortable and more convenient to use it on a desk.
Now hurry up with those quad core temps! -

haha when I get the thing you'll be the first to know.
