I recently ordered my first laptop--a GX620 from newegg ( link). I unpacked the laptop and started to get it set up, but the touchpad was not responding. I shrugged, plugged in a USB mouse and figured I would have to find a driver for it. However, after successfully booting up into Vista, it still wasn't working.
The Fn+F3 toggle would show the touchpad icon on the screen, but toggling it from off to on didn't help. I checked the driver disc that came with the GX620, but nothing fixed it.
I checked in the BIOS for some kind of enable/disable switch for the touchpad, but found nothing.
Is there a driver of some sort I need to install for the touchpad to function or did I just happen to get a dud that needs to be replaced? I did a few searches here, but didn't find any similar posts so I figure it might be a fluke.

Did you ever get your touchpad back from the dead?

I'm afraid not. I messed with it over the weekend with some help from friends, but nothing we did could coax the thing into working. I've shipped it back to NewEgg to get a replacement. I couldn't find anything on the internet of people having similar problems, so I suppose it was just an unlucky fluke.

It's a little frustrating that components like that aren't yet swappable in laptops, considering their common manufacture. Four screws (or just a slot) and a standard plug could save a lot time and hassle for warranty providers.
Although it would allow smaller manufacturers laptop to compete even more with the larger companies so it's easy to see why they would resist it.
at least you've got practice setting the unit up heh -
Heh, that's true. In the time it takes for the replacement laptop to get here, I'll have everything I want to install all set up on a few discs so I can knock it out in an afternoon.
