I've been lurking the forums for a while now and I really want to pick up a GX640. I looked at so many other options and keep coming back to this machine... However I am not stuck on the red accent.
The barebones model (MS 1656-ID1) with the 5850 with the same parts as the GX640 is more expensive to build on places like RKComputers, etc. and few places even sell it. Does anyone know if I can expect this price to come down, or where to get parts separately?
Basically I don't want the red/orange paint and the flashy touch key section on the GX640, but otherwise love it. Any helpful suggestions? I'm even thinking of buying and repainting, but maybe ordering spare parts could work?
Thanks!
*I should mention that ordering parts presents a possible problem with shipping costs as I am in Canada. Also, how does one go about ordering said parts?

I would get the barebones and buy the parts (cpu, ram, HHD...) on ebay.

just depends how badly you want to save money vs a little red trim. I think if you saw a GX640 in the flesh you wouldn;t think it's nearly as flashy as the pics look online.
Also, either way you've have the red paint on teh WASD.
Remember that there's only a one year warranty on the barebones as well (if that matters to you.
Oo you want mostly stock specs? If so, I wouldn't reccomend the GX640 -
That warranty is a pretty big deal, especially because the difference is two years, that might be enough to push me towards the GX640.
Do you mean go for the GX640 if I want stock specs? and 1656 if not?
Has anyone ordered parts from MSI before? I'm thinking of maybe ordering the other touch button bar in plain black if possible. -
Agreed with MH , eBay is the way to go when it comes to barebones. MSI don't sell parts to customer ..

if you're going to stick with stock specs there's no point getting a barebones. even if you ebay ALL the parts you probably won't come out ahead. Unless looks are worth a couple hundred dollars and a lot more effort to you.
And of course losing two extra years on your warranty.
GX460 or MS 1656 Barebones
