    Hi guys,

As some of you must know, we succesfully upgraded the MSI 16F2 (GT680) and 16F1 (GX/GT660) with the beasty ATI HD7970M (cf. http://forum.notebookreview.com/msi/659226-7970m-heatsink-modification-5.html) and now I'm going to try a Clevo GTX680M 4GB GDDR5 in both MSI 1762 (GT70) and MSI 16F2 (FAIL).

The 570/580M heatsink will fit directly to the GTX680M ! You only need to add some pads to compensate the lack of height on some locations.
Here are some pictures of the card and the thermal pads layout:

    Thanks for testing!

Do you also have a 1761 (gt780) to test? My understanding is that the 1761 (gt783) had some modifications to the motherboard to support more power to the mxm slot to support the 580m. But the 680m has shown to use about the same or even less power than the 570m, so it probably doesn't even matter.

Installation and testings on the way guys ! The heatsink doesnt need to be ground at all !

I do have MSI 1762 (GT70 Barebone with Ivy Bridge CPU) and MSI 16F2 for the experiment!

After about 6 hours of tough fight, the GTX680M is now working in the MSI GT70 Barebone (MSI 1762) ! Special thanks to Kingpinzero for supporting me all along and modding these bloody .inf files like a genius and Majster_msi !

First benchmarks coming soon as well as pictures and procedure!

Check 1st post for the first benchmarks! All good.

Oh yeah, some serious things we gone thru installing that card lol, thanks matey.
Ninja skillz into modding drivers on the fly FTW lol
It requires a modded driver because Paul card has different hardware Ids compared to other 680m's.
Anyway in the end is working! I'll leave the details to him.
Now we need to fit it into the 16F2 :)
You owe me some sleep lol

    Great job guys :D

A few things I noticed: The Firebat and the GT70 was suppose to get these clocks. Your clocks are the same as Clevo. Have MSI changed them?

Here are the clocks I`m talking about

Question: What temperatures do you get with 680M at stock clocks btw? And have you noticed them in comparison to 675M/670M?

    Thanks :)

Pic of the laptop itself added.

Stock clocks, max gpu temps were 72°C (Vantage) and 69°c (11) if I recall.

MSI GTX680M has a different vbios than mine - they have implemented their usual "Turbo" feature to overclock slightly the GPU - mine is a Clevo card though recognized as a MSI card but still with a Clevo vbios.

72degree with turbomode and turbofan on ?
I have noticed that my fan never reach 100% even at hard load. When pushing it max, i still can click the turbofan button and the fan revs even higher

Did you have to update to the new GT70 bios that added support for 680m?

Also, does the copper plate on the 570/580m heatsink completely cover the 680m gpu die? The 570/580m were rectangular, while the 680m is squarish if I recall.

I can reply for him, since I've assisted him into installing the card.

    1) yes you need the last bios update which added support for 680m (GT70-0NC bios). EC firmware is different tho.

    2) gtx 570/670m heatsink does perfectly fit. You need just different pad thickness to compensate the gaps.

The barebone is available from PwnPcs, as for the card, we're using a clevo 680m.
Dunno if they will offer the card with the barebone itself, you could just get a card off eBay and install it straight away once you've upgraded the bios and once you got the proper pads needed to fill the gap of the heatsink.

    How's it going with the 16F2 (GT680)?

I'm interested in those findings as its more similar to my 1761-ID1 being that there is no official msi bios for 680m support and a pre-580m model.

For now, the Clevo GTX680M doesn't seem to post anything in the 16F2, even with an external screen hooked up - same issue I had with the Clevo AMD 7970M.

Afaik he's in talk for a dell 680m.
Clevo cards has this issue with 16f2, we suspect it's bios related due to the nature how new EMs are made.
Dell 7970m works fine, so our guess until we get a dell card sample is that it works as well.
It works in the GT70 probably because the system uses a similar hardware to Clevos, like having both gpu and igpu muxed together.

Good thing I didn't order myself a clevo 680m yet, it probably wouldn't post in my 1761. Has it been tested if you can flash a different 680m bios onto the card?

    Also, what is EM?

EM is the newest line of notebook made by clevo. Precedent was HM. First letter stands as the platform name, in the older one case was Huron River, so it's Huron Mobile :)
You can still upgrade to 7970m anyway as long is a dell card. As for 680m, as I said only Paul knows when and if we can test one.

I'm looking forward to your findings. It seems the stock clevo vbios has something with optimus that causes it not ti wirj in laptops without optimus.

The Taiwanese guy (that Cloudfire pointed out) was using an msi 680m and it worked in a GX660R. I'm assuming the msi vbios doesn't have the same problem as the clevo vbios.

MSI 680m vbios shouldnt have the video out signal pass thru (igp) in it, that's why it should work.
But also we need some more confirmation. Technically Clevo and MSI should be the same identical card, dell used a custom board with less ram.
That's also explains why a dell 7970m proved to work either with stock dell vbios or with HM modded vbios with igp pass thru function disabled.
If Paul and my theories are right, even a stock 680m dell should work straight OTB.
He will test it in the coming week, hopefully there's a good news.

Does Pau1ow has 670m or 675m version of 1762? Does it make defference with power supply capability between the two? I wonder if 670m model can fully OC 680m.

Let me reply for him: he does have 670m version, though PSU is the same between 670, 675 and 680m MSI Barebones (and OEMs). THOUGH he's going for a 220W PSU because he likes overvolting.
The internals shouldnt have changed too.

Thank you. I don't think 16F2 w/570m and 16F3 with 670m are much different as far as GPU power supply capability goes. I got 16F2 with 570m. So I am hoping that I can have 680m work on it with good OC and overvolt. I read that 7970m could not have stable overvolt with 16F2. So I was curious.

The 570m / 670m and 680m are pretty much on par in terms of power consumption at stock voltage and clockspeeds. In fact, the 680m might even consume a bit less power.

My 1761 uses a 180w brick same as the 16F2 180w version. Using that, I've been able to overvolt and overclock without any hardware modifications. I assume a typical 680m overvolt and overclock will not require more power than my 570m overclock did.

Do you guys think its possible that MSI 680m`s will be offered on ebay or through some retailer at one point?

And does the normal fancontrol still works with the clevo card?
