Just out of curiosty really I am able to get a 2920xm ES chip which has all the temp senors now I know the ES models were subject to extreme testing what I want to know is as these were ES models are these unlocked and able to be overclocked???

Any 2920XM is unlocked but MSI have locked the bios so no multiplier changing (even in a program like TS) is possible.

You have to be a bit lucky for the ES as well, I got mine for £100 and it performs really great (19.3K gpu vantage) and I advised one of my mate to get one of those, but his is worse than a 2630qm (barely 16K on vantage gpu)
I advise you to go for a 2820qm QS or 2920XM ES which will be good but will stay at default clock and could be odd. -
Anyone know how I can unlock the clock manipulation in the bios as mine is greyed out ( I am using xonar's unlocked bios) or is this greyed out due to my CPU being a 2630qm?? anyone with an xm cpu using unlocked bios had a look?

Get a QS chip they are better. laptopmonkey on eBay is FTWW

You need XMP memory to overclock using clock manipulation.
-
Been playing with AMIBCP tonight and xonar has unlocked everything in the bios so nothing I can do there.
Cheers for all your advice peeps -
cheer for all the input guys I just ordered a 2860qm no point having the xm if can't clock it
-
good choice
Where did you get it ? -
-
I agree, good choice. I bought mine 2 months ago when I naively thought that I could unlock the option, but I was left disappointed and stuck with the xm.
-
Yours performs great xonar, nothing to complain about it
I suspect you got it cheap too

I just like my 2720 that stays at 3ghz even with 8 threads. 3.133Ghz with my small overclock actually

I got a [email protected] ES. It's supposed to be 3.2ghz at 4 cores and 3.5ghz at 1 core. It didn't go past 3.2ghz under any condition with the default bios in my msi 1761. After updating to the unlocked bios, it does properly go up to 3.5ghz on single thread some times, but usually its 3.4ghz.
The 2760qm closest resembles this, but my cpu has 8mb cache instead of 6. It's a D1 stepping with AES-NI instruction set, so its practically a quality sample.
Also, does anyone notice that in prime95, the cpu turbo drops way lower than what it is rated. Is it because prime95 exceeds tdp rating for those turbo speeds? At 4 cores, it will drop way lower than 3.2ghz, but in a game like bf3 that uses 4 cores, it stays at 3.2ghz. -
BIOS has pppower and tdP cPU limits. If you can change them
-
-
Nope it's a 2920XM ES for sure
dragon why I can read M17x R3 in your sig instead of GT683DXR!!! -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Because he bought an R3 :/ Then again the price of those 512GB M4s probably match the machine.
-
yeah as we normally say "a traitor in the mist" *run like hell*
no but really the main or even sole reason i moved to this is because of its HDMI input. I wouldnt have done it otherwise.
GT780DXR with ES i7 CPU
