I'm in the process of deciding between these two beasts.

    Both have 12GB memory, 2670QM, and 570M

They are within $30 of each other.

The 780 has the led backlit keyboard, but I've heard these can cause problems.

I already have a bag that will carry the 683, but I'd need to buy one for the 780 (small issue).

I assume the performance will be similar or the same.

    Which is the better choice?

Depends on what you want personally. Do you want a 15.6" laptop, or a 17.3" laptop? I love my GT783, and wouldn't trade it for more mobility. The screen is awesome, and the steelseries keyboard is sweet. I haven't had any issues whatsoever with my keyboard.

It's really just a matter of how much mobility you need/want, and if you want a little larger screen.

It's going to come down to two preferences.

    1. Would you rather have more portability?

    2. Would you rather have games and movies look better?

    It depends on two issues:

    1. Do you want a 17.3" or 15.6" LCD Display?

    2. Do you want to have a backlit keyboard?

If you want to have backlit keyboard, then you need to select GT780DX-406US. Please do not confuse with some MSI bare bone units. MSI 17.3" Bare Bone unit do not have backlit keyboard.

Ah, it looks like the GT780DX has an $80 rebate, making it $50 cheaper. Seems like an easy choice then.

To piggyback on Prostars comments above, several of the resellers do list it as an option to get the backlit steelseries on the Barebone units. Just have to shop around. Goodl uck, and like you just said, $80 rebate, easy choice.
