MSI's version has overclocking utility and WUXGA, plus a faster hard drive, which is a great deal for the extra imo; if buying such a system, why not get the top one.

    no guarantee is a problem.
    buy from ebay 128x pounds
    buy from xoticpc 129x pounds

    only differences are:
    1680x1050->1900x1200
    500g 5400rpm->320g 7200rpm

Oh I thought you were comparing this Advent to US version of GT725, my bad.

I'd rather buy from a reseller, and pay just for the reassurance rather than ebay, but then again its just me.

Buying from reseller, at least they are more likely to be there when the warranty runs out, and can just deal directly with them. where as the ebay seller ... who knows if they are there in a months time? and you'll have to trouble yourself to contact MSI for help...

in UK, gt725 is out of stock now

I tried to run 3DMARk 06 and it would not play ball, it kept complaining throwing an error up, but as I said earlier I still a hard core CS:SOURCe man and I posted FPS on that.

right, iv been slacking a treat on this one. Ill try and get some sort of review type thing done later. The build quality is very good, no keyboard flex or any area that seems to flexible its all extremely solid.

Only comment yo make on build is the top or reverse side where the Advent logo is does flex a bit, nothing major and no pressure seems to come through to the LCD. Apart from that as the pics have shown and other people said top quality build.

Very similar to the 725 with P9500

They are both nearly identical, probabily made from the same type of plastic but different colors.

In store must had every sell guy and woman hassle as I was testing and using the machine for about 2 hours, watched a Blu-Ray, had about 20 applications running and all that before I settled for it.

As stated earlier what caught my eye was the screen in the first place great contrast and hold colour, then came home did home work founf out it was a MSI, and went in next day and picked one up.

Ah cool that's alright, I don't mind getting them seperate 'cause the laptops quite cheap anyway. Plus it's good to hear there's plenty in London 'cause I'll be looking to pick one up in Essex when I go to see the parents and I have to go through London anyway so it' nice to know if I can't get one in Essex I can just nip into London!

    All,

Just run a Cinebench R10 32bit test so you can compare with the MSI 725

    Results for Advent 6555

    Rendering (Single CPU): 2326 CB-CPU
    Rendering (Multiple CPU): 7638 CB-CPU

MSI 725 as per Driver Heaven Review shown earlier

    Rendering (Single CPU): 2741 CB-CPU
    Rendering (Multiple CPU): 5066 CB-CPU

Would be interesting to know how hot this laptop gets while running an application that uses all four cores and the GPU at the same time. This excludes most current games, I think... game developers haven't really begun to exploit multicore processing power.

For myself, besides games I'd be using my laptop for running large mathematical simulations (using software such as Mathematica with multicore support) that might also involve a bit of graph rendering, so I was concerned whether the laptop would actually be usable, with regards to heat dissipation, with "all guns firing".

Have any of the new Advent 6555 owners run any tests (real or synthetic) that stress out all the processors and the GPU to the max?

Thats good, though it didn't have bluetooth as there's no mention of it on the curry/pc world websites.

Max have you measured gpu/cpu temps during gaming/benchmarking?

Max tested the CPU performance (single and multi core) on the previous page

I've seen that, thanks... don't really know what the numbers really mean though. :p
And anyway my guess is that these are performance figures which don't have that much to do with heat dissipation over an extended test, which is what I was asking about.

Anyway, I'm going to hang back a few weeks and see if there's any indication that MSI are coming out with a quad-core with WUXGA, otherwise I'll probably just go ahead and grab an Advent 6555 (unless owners report any serious problems with it later on).

According to owners of the GT725, the 725 has a very good cooling system and considering that the Advent 6555 is basically the same, the cooling system should be very similar.

Well ive been playing around with it tonight, this beast is *fast* build quality is excellent unlike the rest of the cheap advent tat. Keyboard is nice to type on once you get used to positions.

Screen is nice and clear with virtually no motion blurring, managed a hyper PI in around 20 seconds without killing any processes on "normal" mode.

Resolution is spot on imho, anymore and everything would be too small. Its perfect, tried out crysis at native res with absolute maximum graphics it played it with pretty good framerates.

Using Visual studio 2008 and compiling my direct X code also in record time, when installing things i went to town and had ALOT of windows open, virtually no slow down.

Battery life appears to be around 2 hours but i was installing lots of things at the time so that was fairly impressive for such a powerful laptop cpu and GPU. I can also confirm that it does have bluetooth, even has some MSI software left on here.

So far so good, worth every penny i paid. Just hope it lasts unlike my previous experience with advent stuff.... if this was not so closely based on the MSI laptop i would not have touched it with a barge pole. I can *Highly* recommend this laptop!

Check out the CINEBENCH (Here the info on what it does http://www.maxon.net/pages/download/cinebench_e.html) test I did that doing huge calculation as its doing a real time graphic render using on CPU and during the multi core all went to 100% for over 5 minutes, I try and run again with Heat Monitors on the other screen, but again what do you mean by extended testing 10 minutes of 10 hours?

Totally agree as its a MSI that the only reason I went near it. Reasonable use I got about 2:30 hours out of it, but that doing my work load which is typing and reading code on and of, but yep I been quite happy with the battery at the moment.

BTW I did some home work on seeing about spare batteries here a link

Yeah I see I wasn't quite clear as to what I meant... it's hard to say, though; I suppose in my case, "extended" would mean either of two things:
CPU-intensive (hopefully multicore) algorithmic computations that might run for upto a few hours; however in this case the GPU would most likely not be used, or would be used very infrequently.
Similar to above, but only for a few minutes, but at the same time the GPU would have to render 3d visualisations (although not quite as fast as game FPS)
I suppose the test results you posted (thanks for those, btw!) would most likely correspond better to the 2nd case.
    Thanks

Good one, mate, another +1 for this laptop in my books... I'll probably spend a few more days trying to satisfy myself that nothing better's available at this price and (if that's the case) will go ahead and buy it.
I can see your point about the screen res, but at the same time, there are those who swear by WUXGA... personally I have lots of windows open simultaneously in my OS GUI most of the time, so WUXGA (1920 x 1200, such as on the MSI GT725) would probably look crisper (although I agree everything would be a bit small). I suppose for non-gaming and non-movie usage it's down to individual preferences.

For HD movies as well, the WUXGA would seem to be the winner. However, I can imagine (and this is a bit hypothetical) that for playing the latest games, the 1440 res enjoy one advantage; it might "couple" better with the capabilities of the GFX card, which although no slouch, isn't going to be powerful enough to play Crysis and co. at 1920*1200 with high visual settings, which means you might be tempted to turn down the resolution anyway. Now I don't know how much things have got better over the last few years, but in my old widescreen HP Pavilion DV1000 the picture only looks sharp at the native 1280 x 800 and not at any of the lower resolutions (which all seem to be in 4:3 aspect ratio for some reason). I don't know if the same problem happens with the MSI GT725 with WUXGA and to what degree... hmmm, I think I'm going to ask in the GT725 owner thread. (Sorry for rambling on)

hi guys, wondering if anyone can help me out, im in the market for a laptop, mainly for gaming play call of duty etc. Mainly looking at a dell xps m1730 specs r 2.6 c2d, 4 gb ram and 2*8800 gtx and recently the advent in this thread. So i was browsing through the net on gaming performance, between 4850 and the 8800 gtx in sli, all i can seem to find is the 4850 is slightly better fps in crysis, 39 vs 44 in high settings.

Another factor was battery life ive read 30 mins in the xps in comparision what i head was a good battery life on the advent.

So in general all im asking is performance comparision between 4850 vs 8800 gtx in sli.
What sort of difference will there be in performance between quad core 2 ghz and c2d 2.6ghz.

Having owned a whole bunch of high resolution monitors for pcs i have to say for none blu ray films a high res screens looks worse due to the fact everything needs to be scaled to fit it, i find most things look better on my 40" plasma than my dell 3007wfp due it being much lower resolution! Gaming wise, however i love the fact i ramp everything to max with a good level of AA and it looks superb!

At the end of the day resolution is not everything, however if desktop space is at a premium i can understand the need for a higher resolution, but i have got to say ive been more than pleasently suprised!

OK, so I got to the point of "hang WUXGA, let's buy this!", but it turns out it's sold out nationwide in Currys and PCWorld (according to their respective web sites and a customer rep at the 0870 number) and also at Dixons (according to their web site).
Pixmania.co.uk claim to have them in stock according to their web site, but there doesn't seem to be any way to confirm whether that's really true (and it seems they're online only, i.e. they have no stores).
Anyone order the Advent 6555 from Pixmania?
