In the UK the retailer PCWorld is selling the Advent 6555 which looks very similar to the MSI GT725 (ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4850, blue ray, very similar looks) but running a Core 2 Quad Processor Q9000. Even better its priced at £999, over £100 cheaper than the GT725 (though they have lowered the harddrive size, likely to keep it under £1000).
Curious if anyone else can confirm if this is the same laptop and if so what sort of performance difference the quad core processer will make?

not sure, im looking at getting the advent myself.. actually comparing it to a packard bell on pc world (has a 9800m gts in it).
I'd guess the duo/quad core processor wouldnt make a massive difference to gaming at the moment.. as most games arent specifically coded for quad core, however, when you (obviously) download the windows 7 beta, i think its supposed to be able to make better use of multiple cores, so that should run faster..
does anyone have any idea how fast the 512 4850 in that thing should be?.. or wether it'l be able to outpace a 9800m gts 1gb? as im stuck.... and i want to spend money -
Seeing as the GT725 is really an MSI-1722 ID2 with a 4850 card (and a modded heatsink), it's very possible that they're the same chassis with different CPUs. However, I'd give the edge to the GT725 with the P9500 (and even the P8600) because there are still a substantial number of current/new games that do not take advantage of the extra two cores.
-
thanks for bringing this to our attention. if it has a 1920 screen, i m gonna be all over it haha
aslo, seeing as it could be an MSI, i think the build should be quite good, no? -
AWESOME!!! If it is I'm ordering soon.
-
Oh wait, its the lowest end quad with 6mb L2 between 4 cores. If 20% overclocking feature of MSI GT725 is included, 2.4Ghz will be possible with a touch of button, which ain't bad, having a 2.4 C2Q in such package.
If they can add WUXGA screen, and Q9100,this would be an instant seller for me.
I really like this more discreet colouring, that pinkish red was, too vibrant imo. -
http://www.pocket-lint.co.uk/news/news.phtml/22276/23300/Advent-6555-gaming-laptop-launches.phtml
It seems the laptop is 3.6 kg, where as 725 is 3.2kg. -
dont think overclocking is possible though but the Quad core, even at 2 GHz, is awesome. -
I'll go in a shop and see, I think its different system to 725 due to weight differences, but its the lowest quad core laptop...
The trackpad looks same as well -
i tried looking for it online but PC world doesnt have any in stock. when i proceeded to checkout and clicked collect in store, it showed me that there weren't any in stock
-
Apparently this is listed by every company in the DSG. And this price/performance ratio is really too good to be true imo. Guess they know the high street laptop price aren't competitive in present economic climate.
-
i hope they stick with the pricing and bring lots in stock.
-
-
You could get it from Dixons for £960.39 with voucher code of (feb2, lap2).
-
i would say do some research on advent bulit quality and heat problem b4 u buy it just to be safe
-
Yap, better be safe than sorry, and buy in store, if anything wrong happens, return is easy.

I'm really thinking of getting this at the weekend. Its a dream machine...
My only concern is that
1.4850 will be soon out dated
2.massive price drop
3.better system coming soon.
4.If it has 1440x900 screen res
5.Sh*t build quality
But to be honest, I'm shocked to see DSG finally selling a laptop with high end graphics, and 4850 has enough raw power for a year or two to come. Not to mention the lowly clocked quad is faster than the PM 770 in T43p in single thread tasks already clock for clock, having 4 are great.
Secondly I think the price is very reasonable, that being a quad, any quad price will be high for a while. I'd like mobile i7, but it won't be affordable at all this time next year, quite long wait for rather marginal return.
Thirdly, could this be DSG group trying to make a comeback? or just another outliner?
There is no mention of screen res, I would settle for WSXGA, but anything lower is no go. 1440x900 is a show stopper...
Finally I HOPE the quality is good. -

lol just kidding

The ports are at the same places, just different colour scheme. But look even cheaper, the switches are at different places.
As 6555's bios support quad core, and does not come with overclockability, flashing with 725's overclockable Bios will probably no longer allow support for Q9000. While this seems really decent laptop, I'd rather wait for MSI to do quad themselve. -
i hate to say it but advent 6555 is infact the gt725 no doubt about it i just seen the pic of it and its 100% same laptop everything.
i will say go for it 999 with quad core its a steal. i am a bit jalous now i am thinking now if i can return mine gt725 and get the 6555 as its same laptop -
I've decided to bring money on saturday for one. Hopefully it will be with 1920x1200 screen; if so its an awesome system, though I'll leave it if its something too low,eg:a 17 inch qvga, I'll report back then, please wish me luck; would be so crossed if they release one with Q9100 the day I get it.
Incidentally, whats the thermal rating for this quad(q9000)? I found a thread here suggesting its 35w,while others imply its 44/45w.
Seems I may need a 500gb 7200rpm drive if I decide to keep it after 7 days also.
Shall upload unbox and review if I get one. -
if anyone happen to go to pc world and see this system before saturday, please try and see whether you can find its screen resolution.
Thanks -
-
. I think I'll settle for 1680x1050, WUXGA is a bonus, but anything lower and I'll review and return in 7 days.
Is there a way of checking local store stock level of 6555? -
- It is the MSI GT725 chasis, they are identical. Only differeneces are no turbo option on the controls and no red colours. It has exactly the same layout. So build quality would be the same as the MSI GT725
- Screen resolution is 14400*900.
- Comes with Cyberlink DVD (Which will Play Blu-ray). I took one with me and it played it fine, Barraka which is full of vibrant colour.
- Could not get z-cpu installed, to many PC World people over my shoulder, so cannot comment on memory clock speeds or manafacturers.
- The Quad core is the lowest spec one, and therefore may not be the best fit for everyone, depends on what apps you want to run etc. But this is the same issue as when buying any piece of PC kit. And laptops are the worse as you can never tick all the boxes.
So if you can live with the 14400*900 res then I take a look. For me I can live with that as most the time it be hooked up to my main monitor. -
Thanks...
Guess that no turbo and not even WSXGA is bad, I'll look at the system tomorrow and decide. -
Q9000 is going for $348 per 1000 units from intel, even cheaper than P9500; however the next thing up is Q9100 with twice the L2, listed at $851, I guess that's that kept it under 1000 pounds, along with using 1440x900 screen.
Though is it still possible to overclock without the button? -
but come on 1440x900 ??? -
I know, that's merely little higher than 1400x1050 on my thinkpad, oh, thats 14 inches; no wonder they didn't list in spec; I suspect that the HDD is a slow 5400rpm one, while RAM is probably DDR2 667mhz...
-
-
I just to have a 15.4 at 1900*1200 and hated it as it was just to small. So I have to think on this one -
I'll see the system tomorrow anyway, but knowing the screen res, I'll probably wait for MSI's own 725 with quad, 4870 and WUXGA; that low screen is seriously demoralising.
-
First review I have found, not much more content but confirms a 1440 x 900 resolution screen.
http://www.whatlaptop.co.uk/node/1406
I was also considering the MSI GT627, anyone heard if this laptop will be released in the UK? -
this is interesting.
I want!
but im not so keen on lugging it around at 17" especially with taht screen -
dann it. They dont have any stock hm scotland.
-
Anyone bought the Advent 6555 yet?
-
i would buy it if it was available in USA and has better resolution at least 1650.
-
any one bought this yet?
seen it?
any news in general on this would be sweeeet -
I think Max2008's seen it in person and mentioned the screen is pretty decent quality except the disappointing resolution, but that was old news.
I was going to order one, until I heard about the low screen res. They also didn't have it here in the local store, meaning if I ordered one directly from storage, I'd have to keep it. (as oppose to review and return; though no way I'm I keeping an 1440x900 17 incher)
I think they would be able to have them in store by the end of the week, when they call me, I'll go and see if I can 'buy' a system for 7 days to review&return. -
hmmm is the ress really a massive problem? i really like the specs of the system over say anything else for 1000>
but i dont know because of the res -
An alternative would be this:

Hi guys.. thought id chip in as i bought one this weekend..
you can have a look at my small amount of deliberation here, if you like: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=354592
id have to say though, in general im very impressed, ive only plaed l4d and wic on it so far, but both run maxed out at a very decent fps.... this might have something to do with the 1440 x 900 max resolution, which as far as i can see is the only real downside to this laptop. wic in particular looks unbelievable, its running in dx10, with everything on very high, at 30 plus fps.
As far as the msi rebranding thing goes... its clearly a rebadged msi gt725, even some of the bundled software was msi. Having said that, theyve taken out the automatic overclock button (hyperdrive or whatever it was), so im guessing that means the msi bios didnt support the quad core they stuck in.... no easy overclock then
id definately reccomend it though.. also if youre like me and were forced to buy from pc world, its a bit of a no-brainer.
if anyones got any questions about it, ill try and sort you out with answers. -
Cheers for the info mate, getting closer to buying one myself. Can you tell what sort of warranty was on offer from PC World?
-
1 year when I asked

Can you try this benchmark? if you wouldn't mind, I'll send you the key if you pm me...
Also what are the windows experience index? (WEI)
As for graphics, you just go download desktop driver (9.2, and follow the instruction on this)
