    Hi Guys,

I usually haul my Gt72 in an ebags slim professional backpack, but should have returned it after seeing the type of strap clips it uses to secure the straps on the bag. Well, the straps came off while I was standing and my GT72 fell on its corner on the ground.

The only physical damage I can see is that one corner is cracked, fan vents are cracked, and the monitor lid wont sit properly on that left hand side. Everything else seems to be working good.

Should I be worried about my laptop failing on me now?

Are you still within your 1st year? If so, did you register on MSI's site, to get your accidental warranty?

I too dropped my machine on its corner, and ruined all of the right side USB slots. Much sad was had.

Is it going to fail on you? Nah, probable not. It'll just be ugly. And janky.

Was the hinge damaged? That's what I'd worry about most.

Hinge is still good. For the most part, you wouldn't be able to tell that it was damaged in anyway unless you looked at it closely.

Is there some kind of WIFI component in the corner with the power button? I may be hallucinating, but my wireless setup seems to be slow. Could just be in my head though.

The hinge seems to be okay. The only issue is that the plastic clips on the surface plastic of the laptop. No biggie though.

My laptop is still within the 1 year warranty. Are they going to cover this? How is the warranty process usually? I went through Lenovo's warranty process and had a decent time. Thanks.

Edit: Noticed that the accidental doesn't cover cosmetic damage as in my case.

Sorry to hear about this, it sucks when accidents happen.

For your information, standard warranty doesn't cover accidents except manufacturing defects, because that's physical damage caused from accidents/misuse which isn't MSI's fault.
Accidental warranty is only available in North America and you must register your NB within 30 days of purchase in order to activate it, but if not then you can only request for OOW (Out of Warranty) RMA service with MSI.

Thanks for chiming in Kevin. I did register my notebook a day after purchasing it. So I think I'm covered, but not covered because it's physical damage like that?

Both warranties overlap on each other, so if you did activate ADC then you are in good hands, simply call MSI Tech Support and they will be able to tell you about your warranty.

You can actually view this online.

Sorry to hear about that! Good thing you went with MSI who offers the accidental damage warranty as long as you registered it and are in the US!

Let us know how it works out, i'm sure MSI will take care of you!

So just to be firm and clear, by having registered my laptop the day after my purchase [within 30 day window] I should be eligible to get the casing of my laptop repaired / replaced due to damage from a fall? Is it possible to purchase extended warranty or something like that through MSI?

    Thanks guys! Much appreciated.

Edit: Some additional information; I poked through that sticker on the bottom of the case to install a SSD. I did some research prior to doing this to ensure that poking through the sticker was okay. Is this still the case? I didn't do anything drastic like replacing the cpu/gpu glue or anything like that.

As long as it is in warranty and you registered it and got the confirmation that the registration was good you should be good :)

MSI is the only one who can verify your warranty so i would recommend reaching out to them and starting the warranty process on it.

You had to register and submit proof of purchase in order to fully activate, simply adding the notebook to your profile does not count as full activation.
The ADC warranty cannot be extended because it's a free bonus, and the standard warranty which is 2-year term and can be extended to 3-year term.

Okay, so I checked the MSI website and my warranty information is posted up as Standard Warranty as of 3-21-2015, and I remember submitting proof of purchase by taking picture of the receipt and submitting it through their website. So hopefully I have that base covered.

Would having the shell damaged from a drop be considered cosmetic damage?

Does it say standard warranty? Or accidental warranty?
If you can't find, or not sure, best to call MSI tech support directly whom will be able to provide these information to you.

Received an RMA from MSI. Under what justification I'm not sure, but I hope this thing never hits the ground again.

What a bonus to find out though, any other manufacturer and that would be a pretty penny.

If you need a repair report, we can request it from MSI for you.
Not sure how complete it is going to be though but it should be satisfactory.

Feel free to PM me directly.

Here's the update if anyone was interested.

Finally got my beloved GT72 back from UPS. Everything ended up in great condition, except they forgot to replace the damaged casing on my screen lid. overall, very satisfied despite this. Feels new and solid.

Only gripe not related to my RMA, windows likes to delete its boot info so I've been dealing with that for most of the day.

What was the original reason that you had to send the system back to MSI?
Please note that MSI does not fix any physically damaged parts unless you claim ADC warranty (US/Canada only) which requires a confirmed registration within the first 30-day of purchase. However, they usually would contact customers if they see such issue, the best practice to inform them ahead of time that you wanted to have damaged part repaired during RMA request. This allows them to provide you with a repair quote later on.

I had claimed my use of the accidental warranty because my backpack failed on me and dumped my laptop on concrete.

I sent them pictures of the physical damage, but i guess details were lost when i downscaled the picture. My fault for assuming they would see the miniscule scratches and separation in the screen casing. It just snapped in place this time and has stayed in place. No biggie. Overall, I'm satisfied with their repair and service. Will buy msi again for sure.

Good to know, but if you have any issues be sure to give them a call within 30 days otherwise they may not cover it again after.
