Hey guys, long-time lurker here, had a question that's been burning in my mind for a while now. I own an older MSI GT72 2QD (purchased last year, the one with the 6GB 970m, i7-4710HQ, and TN panel), and I was wondering if there was any feasible way for me to manually replace the screen with an IPS panel, possibly from one of the newer G-models?

I apologize if it's a stupid question, but I'd much like to get a better screen on this laptop, and not have to buy a newer model. Love the thing to death, it's powerful enough to do everything I need it do.

I've done a little bit of research, in that this site offers a selection of replacement screens, and has quite a few MSI entries. I just wanted to clarify if the connector has changed any between the original 2QD and the G 2QD, both of which they sell.

I am 99% sure it is the same eDP 30 pin connector.

Pretty sure it would not as you need a GPU that has been certified for G-Sync by NVIDIA.

I'm not entirely sure of the screen that's in it, all I know is that it is indeed the older model without G-Sync, which I don't think I care if that works or not. As to whether or not the GPU actually SUPPORTS G-Sync, I also don't quite know. I'd assume it's POSSIBLE? Again, older model, 6GB GTX 970m. May also be considering upgrading the card as well once the 1080 upgrade kits start rolling out. I'm mostly just concerned about the screen at the moment, to iron out the color accuracy.

Appreciate the input, maybe I'll bite the bullet and drop $80 on the new screen, and report the results. I figured somebody here would have tried it already, that's all. IPS sounds like it'd be worth the upgrade, if it works.
