Does anyone else experience clicking noises periodically emanating from the left keyboard area?
Sound like small pebbles are being tossed from inside.

It's the Western Digital hard drive 'parking' it's head. Happens to pretty much everyone out there, without doing a few software tweaks. It's nothing to really be concerned about.

Is it a Hitachi drive? I never hear of clicking noises from drives parking these days.

Yes, I have the Hitachi HTS727575A9E364 750 GB SATA-II hard drive.

Mentions of keyboard membrane crackle. I am not the only one experiencing this unusual sound.

This is good in practice. It won't fix problematic hardware, but it's worth a shot (at least your system will be up to date).
