My GT70's screen has a grainy texture to it. I understand that it is an anti-glare screen, and not glossy, but I'm starting to think the graininess looks a little too defined. When I was viewing the gt60 model in-store, I didn't notice any graininess, and it was also anti-glare.

Does msi use a cheaper quality screen for the 17' models? The resolution/contrast looks great, but I feel like it's being hindered by this layer of what looks similar to a dirt/grease/grainy texture. It's less noticeable on busy pages with lots of colors, but it's very noticeable on whites and greys.

If it's even possible, do you think it's worth switching out the screen for something better? What would you guys recommend?

That graininess may be a factor of different things besides the actual hardware. You could have some settings adjusted in the nview/nvidia manager that are causing this, like gamma and such? It could be a factor of the Intel display manager as well. Also check the windows built-in display settings to see if anything looks out of the ordinary. Also see what the dpi setting is set to under the display settings as well.

I actually see the same thing. Its almost like there is a very thin layer of water on the monitor, because the light reflects off funny. I think its just the anti-glare screen. I'm finding myself more and more used to it as time goes on, but reading on brighter colors (especially white) is really annoying. When I'm doing something else, such as gaming or watching videos, I don't even see it any more.

    AFAIK, the screen is replaceable.

It's the 17" Chi-Mei panels that MSI uses. I've seen the same thing on an Asus G75 that uses that lcd panel.

Yeah the screen is definitely replaceable. I cannot vouch for the 17", as I only have used the gt60. But mine is flawless. I don't experience any graininess whatsoever.

It is the quality of screen MSI is using. However, after seeing so many MSI gaming laptops, I begin to feel comfortable with it. May be it is the different between a bigger screen to smaller screen, and a matte to a glossy screen.

Had the same chi mei screen in my MSI 1761 barebones and can vouch for the graininess. I replaced it with a AUO B173HW01 v.4 glossy off ebay. It's one of the best TN panel screens out there, with richer colors and is highly praised on these forums. The matte version is B173HW01 v.5 and is also very good. AUO matte film does not have the grainy texture that this chi mei screen has.

Manual replacement of your screen requires some hands-on careful disassembly.

Is it usually expensive to get someone else to switch it out? Do computer shops even provide that kind of service?

There's a YouTube video out there that shows the entire disassembly of the gt70. Just do a search for it. It is in a foreign language though, but easy to follow. Its not hard to replace a screen. Especially with this model. Just very tedious and you must be careful with the little ribbon cables and wifi antennas. Don't let some shop overcharge you.

After doing a little more research, replacing an led screen does seem reasonable, and I'm willing to take it into my own hands.

However, I'm having trouble finding this youtube video you speak of, and it would be nice to view a video that showcases the gt70's screen interiors (I've only been able to find tutorials that use completely different laptops/brands). Do you remember how you found the gt70 video by any chance? I've searched extensively for it, but with no luck.

Thanks for all the support so far, guys!

This was 1 of the main reasons I ended up getting the GT-60 over the GT-70 model....My GT-60 screen is very nice..

If you buy a screen off ebay, make sure you get the exact screen specified. Dont get gyped. Most auctions on ebay say "compatible screen" or "similar screen" and you get some other panel. Seller screenintaipei sells the exact screen specified in the auction.
