GT70 Dragon Edition 2, is it possible to unclock the NOS power limit?

I'm planning to overclock my GPU for the upcoming GTA V. I came across some thread that says I need a bigger brick to push the GPU. So I ordered one right away (Dell/Alienware 240W for about 80usd). Then I heard that this nb can only draw 180w from the brick due to NOS feature.

Can I disable/unlock it? Is there any special EC/BIOS out there that does the job?

Can't log into MSI forum now for no reason. The login page is simply blank, no 404. Otherwise I would have asked the technicians from MSI to provide such a firmware.

    Need your help. Thanks. :)

    Spec: Haswell 4700MQ/GTX 780m

Well it really depends how much you intend to push it, if just applying 50-100mhz to the core you should be ok, especially if you undervolt (and even add the +200mhz you can) your CPU.

Your current setup should be fine with an overclock. I use mine with up to +135 core easily and I hardly hit the power limit constantly. As long as you keep your battery in, you will get the full performance. Unless you play a fully demanding game that maxes the power of the GPU at 100% all the time, you will be fine for hours.

NOS can't be officially disabled, so no extra powerbricks will work. Only through modified bios could you attempt it but I am not sure there is a proper actual bios, only in testing.

Just monitor temps and all, and push your GPU carefully until a point you are comfortable with :)

Actually I'm planning to push the core to over 1ghz, vram to over 1500, buy a 4930MX and push it too (trying to get P10000+). So I'm not sure if the brick + battery config can hang on to that point.

Where can I find the tutorial on how to modify the bios or download the already modified bios? I'm aware of the risk of doing so. If I brick this one I would consider another nb. Just don't wanna give up before I even try.

Anyone knows the email address of Svet (MSI-EN Forum Admin)? I think I can consult him for modding EC/BIOS. MSI-EN servers are currently down.

Yep. But unfortunately the forum is currently down. Can't login. It says "Under construction. Our servers will be unavailable from 1/21/2015 to 1/22/2015.
All registration and rewards redeem will stop service in the meantime. We apologize for any inconvenience caused by this." So I can't reach Svet now.

Do you have the email address? Please PM me the address if you have. There're still some days left before I miss the chance to return my brick so I'm desperate now.

It seems to be working right now. Can you try again?
However, it's not possible to create such mod due to hardware limitation.

Tried again, using both Chrome and IE. Even tried on my iPhone. Still can't log in though. Login page is completely blank.

Well, in fact, users of 1762 (Ivy Bridge GT70) did benefit from a special EC firmware released in the forum. It did removed the limit on how much power it can draw from the port. But can cause damage to onboard components so user discretion was advised.

There is no official removal of EC limits as ivy bridge was not actually limited like haswell.

There is little to no benefit in gaming going over 1ghz core and 1500 memory (I went up to 1020 core and 1500 memory for testing and gaming). Performance increase over my current OC was close to negligible and stability was greatly reduced, not to mention temps.

To reach that high you will need to raise your voltage.

As for the CPU, yeah both the xtreme edition CPU plus OC GPU probably won't sustain max performance. Honestly you are FAR better off ignoring 4930mx and instead buy a 980m. That wull give you a MUCH better performance increase, not to mention 980m consumes less power and should overclock higher.

Thank you. I'm considering 980m. Looks like the heatsink has to be modded for 980m.

Yup, getting GPU upgrade is better way to go with than the CPU upgrade.

The limit is hard-coded in the EC firmware. As of now no one has been able to remove it without writting the entire EC ROM from scratch (not the best of things as it implies testing and debugging).
Even Svet won't be able to remove that limit afaik. I'd follow the suggestion of the others and get the 980m (they know what they're talking about ;))
There's the 970m/980m upgrade thread to help you out :)

Thanks. My 980m has just arrived.

Only MSI power engineer knows how to change this, since it requires extensive knowledge. Too much raw stuff.
