    Hey all

Have the barebone MSI 780m based notebook. Want to upgrade the regular dvd drive in it to a blu ray.

Is it just a standard one for laptops? Can I just remove the bezel on the side and put it on a new one or do I need something special?

    Thanks!

Nope nothing special or proprietary about the optical drive or the bay. Have the unit powered down, remove the current drive, slide the new Blu-ray drive in, and start it up. Windows should see new hardware and install the driver for it, then it's all ready to go. :)

Awesome! What about the drive faceplate? Can it be popped off and put on a new one?

For instance, can it be swapped with this one?

Yes the faceplace is being held by 2 or 3 small holders that you need to pop off. The faceplace should/can be placed on the new drive as long as it has the slots. They are usually standard so it should work. As for the link provided, I don't know :)

K ordered it. Now we play the waiting game. Should the buttons for eject line up as well you think?

When I've swapped optical drives in the past everything has been standard... face plates swapped fine and everything lined up etc... you should be good to go if it's a standard drive!

    ***********************************************

    OK RESULTS!!!!!!

    2 things

1 - DOES IT WORK?? Yes it works. Blu ray drive working great. Playing the latest blu rays just fine! Face plate can be swapped and eject and everything works great! So, to upgrade to a blu ray drive for 30 bucks hit up the ebay link I posted above

2 - WHATS THE ISSUE? - Good freaking luck getting the faceplate off the stock drive without breaking at least one tab. Good luck. I repaired it, but honestly I challenge ANYONE with this laptop to take the face plate off the drive without breaking at least one tab. The tabs are larger then the holes. Its impossible. Just rip it off, then glue the tabs back on.

Other then that, enjoy your $30 blu ray drive upgrade!
