Hi people, recently I have purchased a new laptop with the following specs:

    GTX 880M
    I7 4710MQ
    16GB RAM
    1TB + 128 GB SSD plextor M5S

Also I bought a Cooler Master Notepal U3 to ensure temps stay low buuut, they are not. On idle CPU stays on 40C (my lowest is 38C for just a minute) and surfing they stay at 43C maxing 45C. Playing Crysis 2 temps stay low, around 70c for CPU and 82-83C GPU but when moving to Crysis 3 they reach 89C for GPU staying at 957MHz and 75 for CPU always using cooler boost. I know they are not really bad temps, and I could even go for 93C and be safe but I don't want to reach 90s playing future games so I may not be using the thermal pad correctly. The disposal of the vents are the following:

·1 Vent just at the bottom of the holes where the CPU is.
·2 Vents at the bottom of the GPU heat sink.

I try not to block the hot air of the top left side where the main vent of the laptop is.

I use no vent for SSD or HDD cause they are quite cool. I may be using incorrectly the thermal pad and I would appreciate any assistance or photo of your disposal, at max speed they throw a great amount of air. Also, I won't open the laptop in at least 6 months to ensure everything works correctly, then I will repaste using IC diamond or MX4.

Also, the room where I am testing the laptop is REALLY hot, about 27 to 30C with lots of humidity (Now 26ºC with 78% humidity and 28ºC thermal feeling). It has not air conditioning or even air flow.

    I would apreciate any help!

I don't see anything wrong with those temps, especially the idle temps. Those are fine.

Those are actually good temps specially with 880m. How are temps with turbofan on? Don't sweat it though, your temps are quite controlled. I would only suggest teweking a custom fan profile so you can game with faster fan speeds and thus lower temps. With the very same config except a U2 cooler master, I get between 78-82 C temps on GPU for demanding games.

The only tweaks you can do are repasting, using 0.5 thermalpads properly seated, change thermal pad for paste on GPU/CPU bridge, and use a laptop cooler. Other than that, you can use turbofan or custom fan profiles. I find 70% fan speed to be very effective in general, and 80% only when ambient temps are too high.

In summer, I need to play with turbofan ON though, otherwise I might throttle haha.

I always use turbo fan and those temps are with about 4600 - 4800 RPM. So..., those 78-82 are what I want to get but seems just imposible, only when gaming low end titles like Resident Evil 4 or similar, when going to high end games temps just go up to mid 80s or touching the 90s. I don't know how to control fan speed and what RPM should I use to tweak the temps?, also, what is your disposal of the notepal u2? photo would be much appreciated, and where should I put the third vent?

I don't hope so, but maybe in a few days themal paste will settle and reach lower temps...

If your temp is hitting 90C, then make sure the system is clean if this is used for awhile.
You can also consider repasting the thermal compound using IC diamond.
Lastly, notebook cooler will definitely help to reduce the temperature due to larger volume of air moved by it.

Like I said before, laptop is completely new, less than a week, also I am using a notepal U3 as a cooler but i might not be puting the vents in the right position. Finally, i won't void the warranty by repasting even though is quite an easy job. So, the question is, how should I position the 3 vents of the cooler master notepal U3?

The notebook cooler helps to move the air, so you will see a noticeable drop in temperature.
Repaste will provide a more efficient transfer of heat from components to heatsink, and then eventually pushed out of the system.
Don't worry about the way the cooler is positioned against your system.

If you are experienced with repasting, it won't void your warranty and it might be even advisable. For fan control I use an old Pherein's tool that created hex files with the fan speed tables, and then you write those files to the EC. Without turbofan I also get up to 90s temps when going heavy gaming, but I rarely do throttle (I noticed I throttle when I play on summer without turbofan).

Achievening low temps on stock cooling is very difficult because MSI put low fan speeds to reduce noise, but ended up hurting cooling performance on stock for this model. That is why they also gave turbofan to users that don't mind noise.

Well I don't think that is quite true, when using the cooler (Cooler master notepal U3) + turbofan the notebook just does the same that when only using turbofan. When gaming with GPU at 99% usage at 954Mhz (stock frequency for GTX 880M) temps start at mid 70s and start increasing degree by degree until they reach 89-90C.

If you use turbo fan, it generate louder noise, with notebook cooler then you don't even need to be worried about turbo fan and the noise.

I don't worry about noise, it doesn't worries me, the problems is that using both turbofan and a notebook cooler temps are high.

Verify if the screws on both heatsinks are secured/tight.

I haven't thought about that yet, how can be possible msi don't secure their components when building the machine?

They should, but there's always a "what if" situation that we need to make sure.

I would do it when MSI spain confirms me that I can put out the back cover and repaste.
