    Hi all :)

Could i ask a quick question pls as MSI support was a painful brush off, imho dell have far superior support (in my experience, so far....) yes i had an alienware 18 3D, r3 gtx 780m sli, awesome machine. Anyway, now im in a gt70 20c with gtx 770m.

What i need help with is, and tech support bailed out on me, is can i upgrade to gtx 870m? i know i can but what i mean more specifically is will i need a new psu/ drivers/ bios/ bigger fan or anything else that you could perhaps advise me on?

The shop i intend to buy this from say as there was less than a yesr between these gpu hitting the shops and therefore it should be a straight pnp. They say the bios and drivers etc should be just fine although they said i should use the 870m heatsink.

    Is this true?

    Tyvm in advance

    edit....
my machine is a late 2013 gt70, bios ver E1763IMS.50C, nvidia driver ver 358.91.

MSI tech support can only provide support for non-modified products, which means they can't provide support on contents that are out of service scope (changing GPU other than the original one). This is the same for other companies as well, unless they stated that their product specifically can handle 7xxM, 8xxM, or 9xxM.

The late GT70 can handle up to 870M or even 970M, the heatsink is one thing you will look into due to placement of components on the card which can be different to what you have.
BIOS, EC firmware support are another issue because they do play their role to handle and support GPU, including controlling GPU's behavior.

Do you perhaps know where i can get the bios/ drivers from that i will need?

    tyvm again.

Just make sure your system has the latest versions, that's it.
Nobody can guarantee the new GPU's functionality but most likely it will work.

Actually all MXM 3.0 Type B cards running in GT70 (MS-1763). For the Kepler generation (670MX, 675MX, 680M, 765m, 770M, 780m, 870M and 880M) you do not need new heatpipe. The Maxwell generation is a new heatpipe needed, but it is also possible to modify the Kepler heatpipe. A new Bios or EC Firmware is not required, however, I recommend the latest version (51D).

It would be ideal if the cards from a MSI or Medion device comes, then you can simply install and use the original Nvidia driver. Alternatively, you can also use the VBIOS of the MSI card. So I use currently a GTX880M 8GB vRAM of Dell in a GT70 2oD with the MSI VBIOS. But next week comes a MSI GTX980M in the device.

LiveUpdate is made for MSI motherboards only but not notebooks.
Please uninstall it asap otherwise it can cause unforeseen issues.

    found this:

    http://www.msi.com/files/pdf/Flash_BIOS_by_UEFI_BIOS_Setup_Utility_en.pdf

i have updated the bios, it did'nt brick

also ipdated to latest nvidia drivers so just gotta swap out the gpu, which im giving to local service store to do.

i did'nt want to go to 970/ 980m because of cost but also i dont want to fiddle with modded stuff.

plus i only ever play COD games, and the 870m can run bo3 with high settings, so im wuite hapoy to only go up to 870m.

that will last me a yr or 2, then i will get a new laptop.

i will report back on the gpu swap.

if i use the 870m heatsink will it be more efficient than the 770m heatsink?

im thinking if not i can return the 870m heatsink for a refund.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE who has commented and taken the time, i very much appreciate your kindness

The GTX870M heatpipe is the same as your GTX770M heatpipe. You can even use the Heatpipe for Maxwell cards, since you have to modify it however slightly.
