Several of my "special" buttons quit working this morning.

I was playing test drive unlimited 2 and for some reason my framerate dropped from 60 to 20. I thought maybe it was heat or something so I exited and restarted the laptop. After reboot I noticed that the turbo button would not light up at all, it never gave any indication that I even pressed it. Also the eco button didn't work. However the fan button did work.

Then I tried doing a complete shutdown and cold boot, tried swapping from my ebay AC adapter to the stock MSI one, going to battery mode and back on AC. Nothing I tried worked.

I did not install anything, remove or disable anything on my system. However Windows did install a critical update and made a restore point right when I first booted up. So I restored that point, which did not fix the turbo either.

I used nvidia inspector program to force and overclock (same as I use when gaming 720/1440/1735) to make sure I didn't fry my video card and also check the temps to make sure I wasn't overheating the card. The overclock worked fine and temps maxed at 81c in test drive unlimted 2, and 63c in black ops. Everything was working great except the fact that some of those buttons were not working.

Finally I decided to reinstall the System Control Manager which I think may have something to do with the buttons, no go. Lastly, thinking it was the drivers got messed up somehow I tried installing the stock drivers (using clean install option) rebooted and now it is working. I was on the 280.36 which until that point worked great (except for the loss of LED backlight control)

I'm not sure exactly what the problem was, if it was just the driver thing or a combination of several things that I tried. I just wanted to see if anyone else had ever seen this and also help out if anybody else runs into it. If it does it again I will try to figure out if it is the drivers or system control manager. I will probably play for a day or two with the stock drivers first. I may try the 275.50 next since I heard the LED backlight works with them.

just curious but is screen brightness adjustable when you're on 280.36?

No you cannot control the backlight at all with the 280.36.

I would prefer it work, but it's not a huge deal. I always have it on highest anyway when plugged in. It's a trade off for faster performance.

Same with the turbo really, I can overclock by other means, but it's just a nice easy button to hit to enable/disable it. If I get annoyed and have problems with the stock drivers as well I will go back to a higher performance one and just live without the use of the buttons or brightness if I have to.

also what is your overclock rate? I put mine at 745-1490-1900 with Afterburner and havent come to any problem yet. Its certainly better than the Turbo function of MSI.

Not trying to be rude but did you read my post lol? Both questions you asked were in the post. Just kidding man, but seriously I have had very good luck with 720/1440/1735. If I go any higher I get small artifacts in game. I think I even had a blue screen at 750/1500/1800 the one time I tried it.

Either I have a poor overclocker or afterburner can overclock further, or both. Not sure why it would make any difference at all though. My temps seem to be fine though so no worries there.

Not sure how afterburner works, but I love the way the built in overclock in the nvidia drivers works. It's stock when you have the turbo off, and punch the turbo and it applies your overclock. So I can visually see when its on or off even in game.

I was using 280.36 then 280.36 and back to 269.13 for the brightness to work. Afterburner is 2.2.0 beta 6.

No, u dont need to install all of that.

Only install newer versions of programs u ALREADY have installed. Also check for new drivers, u may not have it installed or the live update doesnt detect it, so read carefully which drivers are available and then choose to install it.

For example i see there is a realtek HD audio driver. What audio driver are u currently using?? if it is realtek, then the liveupdate doesnt detect it. check version on device manager. if liveupdate offers a new driver then DO install it. If not then just ignore it.

The drivers don't work? Or the brightness doesn't adjust?

It's the inf I used for the 280.36, and someone else said the brightness worked, I had never tried those so I was only going on what I heard.
