Sorry if this is a repost. Did multiple forum searches with no luck before starting a new thread.

I need advice/help with my NEW gt660. As soon as I got it out of the box and turned it on, once windows booted, the circular fan under the right side, near the battery, starts making a clicking sound. It definitely is louder than I would think is normal. It's not a general hum/white noise like most laptop fans. I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction to fix the problem. It's under warranty but I don't want to have to spend $50+ to ship it to CA to have it fixed if I don't have to.

Also, I've read people update bios when they get a new computer, should I look into doing this as well?

    Any help is appreciated.

Are you sure it's not the hard drive? I remember that was a common problem.

You can try taking off the back cover and holding it over your head while it ran to see if there's some funny business with the fans.

You may be right. I think what I originally thought was a fan is actually a speaker or subwoofer? That's what it looks like anyway. And ya, after you mentioned it, it could be from the harddrive....

Well, run a stress test on the components, ideally we'd need something that pushes the power components of the 660 (Not just the hardware).

As soon as the fan cycles up you'l be able to cancel it out as the reason, however at this point you want to be listening to the speakers closely as well, from experience i've known certain whines and odd noises can actually be generated under high power condition (BUT VERY UNLIKELY).

I'd say try moving some files across over (Folder rather, a heavy game folder, copy and paste that somewhere so all the different sized files are being moved) and then let it idle, you'l be able to tell if its the HDD click of something...but its hard to say if the hard drive will live or die, people say its bad, my sonys been doing it for 3 years :D , you can get some feedback off the laptop too if this is the case, other then that nothing should really be clicking, except keys and mouse pad buttons!

Ok, so I finally popped the lid off the bottom of the computer and took a look at components as it was running. The hdd is underneath the right-rear side of the pc and the noise is coming from the left-upper side of the pc. There's a spot for an additional hdd and a speaker/subwoofer so it seems to be definitely coming from the speaker/subwoofer. The fan is on the right side so it's more than likely not the fan or hdd. Not sure how to trouble shoot the speaker...argh...ideas? I might just have to give in and send it back. Damn it I don't want to wait months to get it back.

When and where did you buy it from? If it is less than a 2 weeks you might be able to get an exchange. That should be free and it is definitely faster than a RMA.
