    Hey guys,

Things have been going great since I've updated my laptop to the 970M. Great chip and I've been enjoying Dragon Age Inquisition with all the settings maxed.

Last time I really used my laptop was the middle of last week. After gaming, I ran Windows Update, started the patch cycle, and went to bed. Laptop was plugged in.

Last night, I go to fire it up and the battery was at 9%. Power brick was still plugged in but it wasn't charging. The battery LED was also a solid blue - something I had never seen before. I checked the outlet and the socket on the brick, everything seemed good. Laptop jack seemed good. I heard a slight (but normal) crackle when I plugged the brick in - you know - just enough to know that there was electricity flowing.

I was able to get into HWINFO before it shut down. Battery wear level was around 15-17%. Not bad for a 2+ year old laptop.

I tried the EC firmware reset by removing the battery and plug and let it sit. Put the battery back in and it was completely dead. I also removed the battery and tried to power it on just with AC and it was dead too.

So my question -- am I more likely looking at a dead battery or power brick? At the moment, I'm leaning toward the power brick, but I'd like to get your thoughts as well.

    Thanks!

I would guess that its not the battery if the wear is only 15-17% I'm not sure what specifically, but that's what I would wager on fellow GT60 upgrader! Hope you figure it out soon!

I ordered another power brick from Amazon. Should be here tomorrow. We'll see if that works. Thanks!

I hope it was an official replacement and not the cheap knock offs you get as that could introduce more issues.

Ups, which issues can I have with those "unnoficial" adapters? I'm using now a "non official" battery on my lappy, since the original one had about 85% wear level games didn't perform well. I also bought a power adapter (the original one works ok) just as a backup so I can have one at my office and one at home. Should I stop using it?

It looked like the same one I had (Delta 180w) and has a 1 year warranty on it, so I hope it's legit.

There are at least two brands used by MSI and Delta is one of them so it is legit. However, not sure if the model # is the same as the original equipment or not.

You need to ensure the adapter is a genuine known power supply manufacturer and meets real safety specs.

Knock off supplies can cause massive EMI interference impacting things like wireless connections and radio signals. They risk electrical shock due to poor construction and lack of proper circuitry. There is a risk the brick will not be able to meet its specified load and under heavy loads could pose a fire risk. Get a supply that has genuine safety markings from a known manufacturer (it does not have to be ones that MSI uses though you certainly know they are good) and you will be much safer.

In addition to those risks, a badly designed adapter can also cause damage to your systems.

Finally got the brick - and an extra free month of Amazon Prime since they didn't meet their shipping guarantee. :D

Weird this is that it's an Asus branded brick, but the electrical specs are correct. Jack fits fine and it works.

So, was it the power adapter after all?

Seems like it. I plugged it in, and the battery charge LED lit up. I was able to power back on and it's been on ever since.

Glad it's all working for you now. Manufacturers often just silk screen their own logos on the bricks but inside they are just the same.

Great, please note the AC adapter provides at least 150W power while battery pack can only supply 50W power.
