My wife was nice enough to snag me a surprise gift during Black Friday and got me a great Timbuk2 messenger bag, but the medium doesn't fit. Hell, even the large D-Lux model says it won't work when I plugged in the dimensions. The large would be rather long anyway I think.

Does anyone have a really nice bag which fits the GT60 nicely without being overly large like my Targus case made for large 17-18" like my old Asus G73JW.

All the bags have a tendency to become bulky once you hit that 17" market. You could look into a sleeve, although you'll be missing out on the compartments and probably a carrying handle/strap (and the bags typically have a more sturdy/robust build quality). To be honest, though, I don't think there are any sleeves designed with the GT60 in mind.

Lol, this is all newegg has for accessories for the unit: Newegg.com - Targus Black 17" XL Notebook Backpack Model TXL617

Yeah, I noticed that with the 17" Asus I had, but we did not expect that to be the case with the GT60 and it's smaller screen. The issue seems to be the big fat the GT60 has. It has turned that the width * height dimensions are just a smidgen higher than normal for the 15" class. Of course it is way too small for my case made for a large 17" gaming laptop.
