So I was wondering since I got a GT72S with a 60hz panel (which I could OC to 105hz) if I could upgrade to a 120hz panel with better color coverage. So far I know that my panel is a 30pin eDP 2lanes Panel however I'm wondering if I got another eDP port on this model, since apparently MSI also does offer this model with a 4k UHD screen and 100% sRGB, which I believe is a 40pin 4lane eDP panel. So I am wondering if anyone knows more about this.

Could you get the edid from this panel? Reviews are an option to find out the panel nr., but identical laptop models can use different panels due to differences in motherboard revisions.

It might be a 2-lane/40-pin lcd, but it's also possible the 4-lane/40-pin is run from a 30-pin connector on the motherboard end since not all pins are mandatory and some of them can be combined. A photo of the mb would easily show the connector's pin count. There won't be two connectors, unless the other one is an LVDS type, but there might be two motherboard versions, of course.

I ordered yesterday a 120Hz FHD display for my GT72.

To get myself covered, I ordered the panel and the 40 pin eDP cable:
    https://www.aliexpress.com/snapshot/0.html?orderId=91465571940226&productId=32823062741

For 8-9€ its assurance that I have the needed cable, but at least on mine I'm almost sure that the current one is the 30 pin eDP cable.

And the new panel model: N173HHE-G32

The same cable and panel will fit your GT72S.

Now, to play the waiting game D:

Good luck senso i am thinking of doing the same thing as well but wanting to go for 1440p @ 120hz Using AUO B173HAN01.0 screen instead. I know the GT72s series used 30 -> 40 pin EDP cable so a 40 -> 40 pin EDP cable would be needed for the upgrade anyhows. Only after upgrading my MXM card from GTX 1060 to GTX 1070 so that i can play games at 1440p to relieve CPU bottlenecking which occurs from 1080p gaming.

I was tempted to get the 1440p display as well, but there are some reports of banding on this forums, and the sRGB and aRGB coverage is a bit poor.

And I know that going for the 1440p would get me hitching to grab a 1070..

When you say banding what do you mean? Do you mean colour gradient of Grey's etc showing more then normal like the 6bit panels. Ya the only reason going for 1440p is the excuse of getting a GTX1070 lol. As I know that the next Nvidia GPU's will not come out in MXM for a while if at all because if the BGA filth everyone apart of a select OEM is going down.

Did you mix the 1440p panel model number?

The one that I read more about is the B173qtn01.4

And the banding was talked in a couple posts/topics, and you can also watch this video:

As far as I know, the 1.4 version of that panel should be the best 1440p available on the market till now.

On another note, my display and eDP cables have been shipped, hope the display arrives intact.

Nice one and thanks for the info. Loosing my rag right now with my laptop right now. Starting to wonder why I go down the hard path when it comes to installing OS and sysprep I really do. So far 8 sysprep fails.

Will look at the specs of the 1.4 screen later if I can get my laptop working nicely.

Dont get me wrong, what are you trying to achieve with sysprep?

At my last job we used it, so that after a warranty repair the client would be greeted by the Windows setup screen where they can put their user name and what not, but nothing besides that.

I used to be able to make my own one button press recovery where I have installed all my apps and tweaks, then sysprep'd it and captured the image. It just made it easier for me but it would seem Windows 10 1803 has had some changes. So it looks like I am going to just try booting into audit then running my script to see if I can fix the issue

Ohh, ok, I never created any image using it, hence my curiosity.

When I do clean installs I preffer to download all the latest drivers from intel, nvidia, killer, etc websites directly and then install them, some programs take a bit of time to setup, but I kinda enjoy doing so.

You could do an image with a dedicated imaging software, or a live boot pen with ubuntu and dd and then use that as your recovery image.

@t456 Would the suggestion from senso about the QHD screen i am after which is 1440p @ 120hz 17.3" work well after getting the 40 -> 40 pin EDP connector?

I would be upgrading from a LG Philips LP173WF4-SPF1 (G-Sync system, but as i am running a different MXM card and upgrading to a GTX 1070 its not a worry for me).

The SPF1 is a 2-lane/30-pin, so the 4-lane/40-pin cable would be required. You might sell the old cable and lcd once everything's running as expected.

Thanks @t456 for your reply i knew about the 40 to 40 pin EDP cable being required just was wondering if the screen itself would work fine. Thinking of doing the screen first then the GPU and Heatsink second. As for selling the old cable and screen it depends as i still have my old GTX 560m MXM (Heatsink as well), GTX 970m MXM gpu's. I tend to hold my old part(s) after upgrading the system as when i go to sell them on if i get someone that low blows me i will normally just return the system to stock with out any mods.

Only getting a new screen for two reasons firstly because 1440p insure CPU bottle-necking like seen at 1080p is not an issue, secondly i am going for a GTX 1070 MXM upgrade and using a GTX 1070 or even a GTX 1080 on 1080p is overkill.

My cable is still somewhere on its way, and my lcd is at customs, yay...

Hope they dont mess my new display, but one thing is sure, it will take over one month to get it out of customs..

    @hacktrix2006 , @t456 , @Danishblunt , @Paparatsio

Display and cable have arrived, yesterday was swap day.

Given how the eDP cable is routed in the GT72, a full teardown is the only safe way to swap the cable, so that was what I did, take it all apart, swap the eDP cable, swap the display, put it all back together, fix a couple broken nuts in my lcd cover with a bit of epoxy(one side had already failed, previous owner broke it).

It works right of the bat, Windows detected and changed the refresh rate to 120Hz automagicaly.

Played a couple games, had to change my sensivity a bit, it feels smoother, and it sure is a lot brighter than my previous one.

The bad part: lost brightness control, might ask Svet if there is anything that can be done, poked around BIOS, in my old Asus that I unlocked all the menus I could change the polarity of the backlight polarity signal, but I dont think this is a polarity difference, either its on another pin that my laptop isn't controlling, or different frequency.

The display has a tiny scratch(the size of a pixel) that shows up on full black images.

The matte coating seems fuzzy, can't really explain, and its a TN, used to have IPS everywhere, having the TN fading again is strange.

All in all, not sure if this was the best idea, total cost with customs ends up in the 100-105€ ballpark, I got the cheapest N173HHE-G32 (rev. C) that was available on Aliexpress, I didn't expect a perfect ready to use by ODM's displays, and my previous display also had a couple nicks/scratches.

It also runs hot(in the 30-35ºC range on the bottom where the pcb with the led driver sits), but I don't remember if the previous display would heat in that area.

Conclusion, not sure if worth it or if I should have put the 100€ into the 1070 fund, with one being sold in this forum for 400€ in Europe, I'm a bit thorn apart.

    ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Your mistake was buying from aliexpress. THe quality of panels from aliexpress is pathethic. I've tried them twice and got twice garbage screens, went back to ebay and got a happy purchase.
I'm wondering about the brightness control tho @t456 any input on how to fix this? :)

I have also bought panels on ebay, it was also hit and miss, even buying panels from the US.

On my last job we bought panels directly from AUO, Innolux, LG, and others, there I got some real ODM grade display at resale price, oh the perks that I miss..

I might get a 1440p next time, and will try to get it from a reputable distributor.

Nice one @senso , as for brightness control have you tried to see if it works on the iGPU? if it works on that then its just a driver issue which should be an easy fix after a DDU run and reinstall. As for the heat bit, is it right near the MSI branding on the screen? If so then that does get hot as mines gets really hot on the stock panel pushed past 75hz.

Yup, right at the MSI branding, thanks for the info.

I have never used the iGPU in this laptop, but I can try it out with the iGPU(will have to install the drivers, so it will be a clean install of them) when I get back home I will test that and report back.

If you want to upgrade, just do yourself a favour, and maybe try to get a display from HID or some other reputable seller.

I dont know what this thing is, but its not a Chi Mei panel, and its not an 100% sRGB for sure lol.

Red is orange, orange is meh, yellow on this forum is almost un-readable, blue is miserable, and the greens might have been left on China lol.

I had it coming, buying lcd's from Aliexpress..

That and the pcb with the lcd driver/backlight and where the connector plugs-in is plastic with alu foil, all n173hhe-g32 images that I see, have black foil in that place, so, yeah, you can call it fake :/

That and I'm still not sure if its even a 120Hz display lol, I cant tell any difference from my previous display.

    The new panel arrived today.

    Swapped, and, YAY :D

MUCH better overall, this is the real deal, better colours, brighter, backlight is adjustable, and its so crisp, the other one was blurry.

And brightness controls work right away without re-installing any driver.

    @Danishblunt, @hacktrix2006

@XMG Thank you for recommending that seller, shipped with courier at no extra cost, massive box with 50x50x50cm, lcd was wrapped in 10 meters of bubble wrap!

Thanks bud, was the connector placed back the same or did you have to swap the position around?

    On the display side?
Same side, just swap the cable and route it via the same place, be warned that you need to do a full tear down and remove the mobo due to how the cable is routed.

Thanks sensor, ya I knew about the full tear down part but it's needed anyway. I need to clean the under keyboard side anyway and also check to make sure everything is ok on the mainboard, as well as sort my hinge out as it's getting stuff now. MSI really doesn't do well with hinges.
