Hi there. I got a new GX740 just a few days ago, and it was operating quite smoothly. I installed everything fine, and was browsing the web while sc2 was installing on the background and a few other downloads were going on. Suddenly, I got a GSOD (grey screen with black lines running down).

I updated the VBIOS, BIOS, and firmware to the latest version. But I still got the GSOD from simple web browsing. Further, sc2 couldn't detect the optimal graphics level and kept on telling me the driver's out of date - even though MSI's homepage lists the driver I have as the latest driver.

Can someone help me on this? Why am I getting a GSOD despite following every instruction?

Have you updated it to the latest vBIOS? latest drivers?

I updated to the latest vBIOS, BIOS, and firmware. But the drivers in the MSI homepage was already the version installed in this computer. Do I need to update further?

You could try using the latest drivers from AMD website but I have never experienced GSOD's on mine unless I was OC'ing.

I did use the latest drivers...

    I had wc3 up but minimized through alt-tab. I don't think that could've been a problem...

Sounds like exactly what happened to my first GX740. Had to end up RMAing it.

I got a GSOD (grey screen with black lines running down).

    Sounds like an RMA IMO.

Have you ever ran Furmark ... ?

I actually just ran 3dmark06 and 3dmark11 without much problems. I'll run furmark now...

FurMark needs to be in extreme burning mode at 1680x1050 with 8xAA for at least 5 minutes to see real temps.

Check CPU temps and your Thermal Diode temps.

Check the memory you can do this by downloading game booster or something like Avast they both check your memory for errors i think.

    Hi.

I just checked with another problem. Note this is less than ONE WEEK OLD. :(

    I did the following:

    1. updated to latest drivers
    2. updated latest VBIOS, BIOS, firmware
    3. checked with furmark, made sure their temps are fine

Just 10 minutes ago, while browsing a youtube video, i got a BSOD. not even a GSOD, but a BSOD. I wasn't fast enough with my camera to catch it. But I did have the error message:

    Code:

The blue screen of death happened after the first time, when it said the device driver stopped responding but was recovered successfully, then after 30 seconds it shut down again, this time permanently and forcing me to lose some work.

    -----

So, in less than one week after getting this and installing stuff, the following happened:
    1. Amazing and sudden FPS drop while in Warcraft III, a legacy game
    2. GSOD while simple web browsing (not even videos)
    3. Display driver stopped responding
    4. Blue Screen of Death

Note the only things I installed are:

    1. Firefox w/ all addons
    2. Antivirus - Avast
    3. Antispyware -Spybot Search and Destroy
    3. 7zip
    4. GIMP
    5. Gom Player
    6. VLC
    7. Autoit
    8. Office

I've been running this setup with my old laptop, which has a comparatively much less cpu, less gpu, and of course, even worse build quality (gateway). And yet, I did not have any of the listed problems.

I am still within my 60 day warranty period. I ask you this: Should I return? Sigh..... I also don't like how the fan's blowing directly on my mouse...

I think you need to run a driver cleaner and wipe and reinstall all your drivers.

Download WhoCrashed, that'll help diagnose BSODs better.

I used to get some random BSODs. Like watching a video off of a USB stick, or BSOD right after exiting a game.

I didn't entirely read this thread, but turn off Hardware Accelarating for flash. That should fix it, fixed it for me.
