    GS65 Stealth Thin 8RF power supply specs

    Hi there, any info on power supply specs for this model? I guess this notebook can't be charged just using the USB-C with Power Delivery like the Macbook Pro, so uses its own barrel connector...

    It still has the same 5.5mm barrel as with other MSI laptops, per my question to MSI. Adapter seems very lightweight, and the 5.5mm barrel is standard with universal adapters. USB-C power is maxed out at 100W from my understanding. Gaming laptops won't come close to it.

    It comes with 180W AC Power Adapter and the tip is identical as previous models (also compatible with Toshiba), and USB-C with power delivery isn't supported.

    Output: 180W 19V DC, Input: 100~240V AC, 50/60Hz universal

    Just wondering if it is possible to use the new power adapter to charge my old GS73? Can't bear the heavy brick anymore.

    As long as you don't do anything heavy then you can use a lower wattage of AC adapter to keep the system powered, additionally, that AC adapter is going to stop providing power if it's overloaded due to self-protection.

    Both the old and the new ones are 180w so wattage should not be a problem but I can't find anyone selling it online. Could you tell me any website that carry the new power adapter? Thanks in advance.

    If you disable the discrete graphics (nvidia) probably the power consumption will be 50 or 60 watts at max, will check tomorrow with my GT73VR.

    Not sure if you know, but the 5.5mm barrel jack is also pretty common in Asus laptops, currently they are using thinner ones in the lower end, but the 5.5mm jack is still around, the most common one is/was the N180W-02, with dimensions as follow: 165*76*30.5mm

    No idea how is the power connector of the GS65 Stealth Thin 8RF, but on the GT73VR it's not a simple barrel with a hole inside, but a rounded one with 4 pins and a groove that must face up.

    In any case, newer computers should charge only over usb-c ports with power delivery. If one is not enough use two at the same time. MSI should really improve to compare to Apple.

    Going by the photos and previous systems, they use barrel jacks, and not the 4 pin jack.

    USB PD for now is still complicated, even a cheapo cable can burn your whole system down, and losing one USB port to use the charger is a bit dumb IMHO, leave my AC plugs in the back of the laptop where they should be, and let me have my USB ports for what they are intended, passing 100Watts through the USB C port already requires good quality cables, an older cable with some dirt in the contacts will either lower the power delivered or you cause a fire, burned/damaged cellphones are already a thing with cheapo/non-compliant USB-C cables, and that is at 10Watts, when you pump 5A through them..

    It could use 2 cables at the end, and have them in the back, but probably a bit overkill because the psu is still very big.
    A gaming notebook like these ones, which are almost like workstations, should come already with 3 or 4 usb-c thunderbolt 3 ports. Heck, even the macbook pro does that. Just preserve 2 standard usb-a ports for a keyboard and mouse. Still a long shot but probably in the near future all gaming mouses and keyboards will end up switching to usb-c instead of usb-a.
    Even more, HDMI and DisplayPort will not be neccesary, because USB-C can fit everything, probably even monitors with G-Sync or FreeSync, and it's the desirable.

    I use my laptop for embedded system programming/developing, and I love having 6 USB A ports, 2 for programmers/jtag, 1 for usb-serial, 1 for mouse, 1 for keyboard, 1 to plug my board under dev because sometimes I need to implement USB Device, one free that will end up being used either for more usb-serial converters, or to connect to my scope to pull data.

    I know, I know, use a hub, but it would need to be a powered HUB, because a single USB port wouldn't be able to supply everything, and having a powered hub is more cables on the already messy workbench.

    I think that would depend on the hardware. If the Vcc and GND of all usb ports are tied together internally, it makes no difference on how many you use at the same time, for the same peripherals. If you run the pc on the battery probably only has a single buck-boost converter for all ports. On wall power, it could use a dedicated step-down converter for each port, but I'm not sure about it, would require some testing (for example when you load a port the others experiment voltage drop).

    On my GT73VR I charge a 5000 mA powerbank at 2 amperes on a single port + having gaming keyboard + mouse which is quite good, I don't think you need much more than that, otherwise you will need external power supplies anyway.

    I never shorted the USB ports of my GT72, so I dont know how good the over-current protection is, but USB ports should have individual power management/over-current protection, and shouldn't deliver power until something burns inside when I have a generic hub that requests at most 500mA and then uses a lot more than that.

    2A should only be delivered if the powerbank uses one of the many, many charging profiles/signalling.
