    Hello,

My wife recently picked up the Gold version of the GS60 Ghost (Nvidia 860m version). Here's what is happening:

Periodically, the screen will present a distorted image very briefly then go back to normal. Once in a game, the video mode switched from Nvidia to Intel. I ended up specifically assigning the Nvidia card to that game and problem hasn't happened again.

I have the switchable graphics set to auto and only assign the Nvidia card for 3D gaming. Generally, the laptop has been stable for her, but the video weirdness concerns me.

Some other basic facts: I have her updated to the latest BIOS and EC firmware. I don't mess around with modified VBIOS...and so far the original shipped VBIOS is the only one available. I inherited her black GS60 and it has no problems running the exact same setup. Also, we're running the latest Intel and Nvidia drivers. Heat also not a problem. Running Furmark for 20 minutes, max GPU temp is 80c.

Just curious if anyone else has encountered this kind of problem. I am concerned about either a faulty VGA cable or card. She's still within the return time so trying to determine if I should pull the chicken switch and return this.

Thanks for any and all input.

Sounds a lot like GPU problem, distorted image usually is, although I personally don't experience this problem.

If I were you I'd return it, that return window is very precious, I know how precious it is, my unit was DOA :p

Thanks for the response. Yes, we chose to return it to Newegg. I have given her the black GS60 Ghost that I inherited from her...so now I'm without a laptop again. Fun fun.

Seems like you've had quite a lot of experience buying / selling laptops, any input of a reseller with the best RMA? I was recently burnt by a reseller so any input will be appreciated :)

That display issue could have been a faulty video cable, but it sounded almost like bad video RAM. It's too big of a purchase to just live with, so it's good that you took action on it (even if you're left high and dry at the moment).

Exactly. I knew I was more than likely dealing with a faulty video card and/or cable. Considering it was a brand new machine within return, felt like that was the prudent thing to do. Thanks again for the time and response.

Sorry for the slow response...just saw your note. I have had great experiences with Ken at GenTech PC. Super nice guy. We've also bought from Amazon. Generally good service although there were a couple of bad situations with shipping. Fast refunds though when we've had problems. Haven't worked with Newegg for years. So, we'll see how they handle refunding my wife's laptop. So far, everything has been OK.

I have been fortunate to have great experiences with buying and selling from forum members here. Always a pleasure.

    Thanks and take care!
