    Hi all,

I have owned a MSI GS30 for 10 months, and it was all great until a few days ago it started making a intermittent rattling noise:

I contacted MSI support and, in the worst case, their RMA process takes 43 business days to solve the problem (including shipping and processing). This is unacceptable, not only because I depend on the computer to work, but also because I am traveling out of the US on January 27th and might not be here to receive the product back.

Considering this, I was thinking about fixing the problem myself. I believe that exchanging the fan would solve the problem, but I could not find the model of the fan online (I still have not opened the computer since I don't want to void the warranty quite yet).

Upon further research, I found at least one more user that had a similar problem:

    https://twitter.com/tha_rami/status/654011052510703616

When I got in touch with him, he said "I originally thought something was hitting the fan, but ultimately it turned out it was more structural than that". This made me rethink the possibility of fixing it myself.

I would like to know if anyone here had similar experiences with this model, have information on the fan model or knowledge on the mentioned structural problem. I have no problem fixing computers myself, but it is surprisingly hard to find any information on this model online.

Any insights on the matter are really appreciated.

    Regards,

    Sam

In US, the RMA process is about 1~2 weeks, at worst case it varies possibly due to unavailable parts.
It's just a fan and your unit isn't an outdated model so it's hard for them to run out of parts.
This issue happens with any manufacturer any model but as far as GS30 is concerned, it's rare.

Any chance Gentech can sell me a replacement fan? I can't even find the model of the fan online.

Sorry, we don't have the parts, only MSI does.
We will check with MSI directly on this tomorrow and then get back to you later.

For future reference, if anyone has the same problem, the model of the GS30 fan is PAAD07010SH N263.

Now, where to buy this fan is still a problem to be solved.

I was able to get parts from the european office and they seemed to have a defined process to get this done, have you asked your local office if you can source from them? The prices were pretty reasonable from what I could tell.

I was talking with MSI, they said that it would take 6 to 8 weeks to get it for me. I am looking for alternatives to expedite this, but no success so far. Do you have the contact of whom you spoke with so that I try to get in touch?

I bought GS30 used and I notices that my laptop fan is also starting to make that noise.
Contacted local service who deals with MSI repairs and RMA, they quoted me for 51eur+tax(20%) for new fan.
I was OK with that. Altough it is 2-3 week waiting time.

That seems in a bit of excess compared to the usual turnaround time, particularly for being within warranty. There's really no way to get it turned around faster?

Is your GS30 out of warranty? Because the product isn't that old and MSI would have covered that repair free of charge even when you are the 2nd owner.

I gave them the serial number and they said it was out of warranty... maybe refurbished... dunno.
Anyways I got my new fan yesterday. Wow, it seems much better- less noise and fan seems to keep itself spinning low even in High performance mode, when doing light work.
Made some pictures of the new fan. Will post them here later.
Made a google search from the info on the fans plastic bag:
    E33-2600050-MC2

This site came on top: http://citosoft.com/prshop/product.php?id_product=579
Altough the availability is NONE, but maybe if somebody want's to make inquiry about it- they can backorder.
Total price for me was 61 euros, through MSI official local support. And i got it in 2 weeks.
I can actually say now, that it is quite low noise laptop! :D

Best to order it directly from MSI because they sell directly to everyone so there's no need to go through a reseller for it.
If MSI doesn't have the parts then it's possible that reseller does not have it.

You mean directly from MSI webpage? Is there such a place to place an order for parts?

Fan itself is the exact same model than original. So chances are the same thing will happen again sooner or later... or the original factory batch was faulty one.

If you are in the US, you can call MSI tech support directly to purchase parts.
How long did yours last? MSI revises parts from batch to batch so even thou you are ordering the same part but the part number isn't the same. It can be a compatible replacement.

Well I am in the EU, so no US benefits :)
Hard to tell how long this one lasted. I bought it used and it already had this slight crackling sound. Not that loud as in the video of this first post.
The fan had exact SN numbers on the back (PAAD07010SH N263.) Same manufacturer also.

I see, that means the part is still around and has not been revised yet. You can have defective component from time to time but this isn't like a high failure item but at least the issue is resolved for now.

    Hello everybody,

today I also had the problem that my fans made terrible noise.
I removed the bottom cover of the laptop.
Then I have removed the power of the fan (1).
    (2) unscrew the 3 silver screws. Now you can remove the fan.
    (3) the 4 small black screws also removed. Now you can remove the upper plate.

Then you see the propeller fan. first i clean the propeller from dusted also make the Heat Plate dust free,

The fan is only put on it. you get remove this by pulling to you.

Now you see the small magnet motor and in the middle sits a small golden ball bearings.

In the ball bearing I put some WD-40 oil.

placed centrally the propeller in the ball bearing again (until it has snapped)

I rotated propeller by hand to spread the WD-40 oil few times.

then reassembled to the fan in reverse order.

The sound that the unbalance of the ball bearing is gone.

Let's see how long it stays silent. I do not hope that it reappears in a few days.

But the fan is whisper quiet again now .

Maybe I coud helpt somewon with this problem

Do it only at your own risk - I just want to tell you what I did

Sorry for my bad english. ;o)

Well done. That works sometimes but not if the bearing itself is already damaged from wear and tear. :)
