So I finally took the opportunity of upgrading 32gb ram to repaste/LM the hotty i7 8750h with full rtx 2080.
The boy was rasing up to 95°C in COD MW and around 80°C for the GPU even with a good -130mV undervolt.

TBH the repasting was a pain for me especially the cleaning, I took my time (3h almost) to clean and repaste everything, quite a mess when I took a look at all the toothpaste to remove. I applied isolant lacquer on the sensitive parts too.

I am disappointed by the results though. Like 8-9C colder on the CPU and almost nothing on the GPU. Did I apply to few LM? I dropped and spread a lot a very tiny drop on each DIE and copper heatsink.
Contact on the DIEs seems good too.
I must say I'm used to apply thermal paste but not much LM, that is my third laptop repasted with it. Quite lazy to redo the whole thing but if that's worth it...
I know I applied thermal paste on useless parts :p

That's an excellent job already and if you got 8~9 degrees colder that's a big profit. Well done. :)

ok thanks, I was always reading results like 15 even 20 sometimes with LM but maybe not with this configuration though...

8-9 degrees under load is very good

Well, have you taken into account the fan speed? It is likely that your fan speed is lower now than it was before if you are using auto. You should only really compare numbers when using coolerbooster or something that gives a good constant fan speed. If left on auto/stock, temperature targets are what controls how warm things get and they tend to be set high given the paste manufacturers use. When I repasted the gpu on my gt75, it still ran at 80C+ but the fan no longer sounded like a jet. After limiting the voltage and OCing in msi afterburner it came down to like 72C. That was in the summer (no AC).

Undervolt it as well... that will give you a further temperature drop..

will check that, I think I'm going for a full throttle stop procedure to make sure everything is optimal.

Now, I live in Europe, and prices in my country are **** and so laptops are generally overpriced in comparison to for example US. But this model has recently gone down in price drastically so now it is in my price range. Other laptops in this price range have i7-9750H with 2070 or 2070 max q. Other machines with rtx 2080 cost nearly double the price. That is why I am interested. My questions are:

    1. How is the i7-8750H handling the monster GPU? - I have read and checked a lot of benchmarks and it looks there is a minimal difference between i7-8750H / i7-9750H / i7-10750H in benchmarks and even smaller margin in games. But you have first-hand experience, so based on your experience is this CPU still viable in 2020 and how is the load in games, like if it is running at 100%, or is it a great partner for RTX 2080?

    2. RTX 2080 - it looks like this GPU is still going to be faster than the new 2070 super and 2080 super max q, so is it performing as it should in this laptop? The first 10th gen intel laptops are coming on sale here but they are laughably expensive and as I said does not seem to surpass the rtx 2080.

    3. RAM and SSD upgrade - The model available here comes with only 16 GB single-channel and 256 GB SSD + 1 TB HDD combo. So I have to add another RAM for dual-channel. Based on the pictures I found, the heatpipe is obstructing the access to upgrade. However the it looks that second RAM slot should be easy to just stick another RAM in ( can you tell what RAM you had from the factory, was it CL-19 timing?), but what about the extra SSD, I see the heatpipe is obstructing the screw but maybe it is still possible to install SSD with some carefully handling without removing the heatpipes, can you please clarify? I am not experienced with upgrading PCs or laptops,I am all new to this, so I will not be confident enough to go and remove heat pipes on my new laptop.

    4. Temperatures - well I kind of understood that the CPU can run hot but as I said I will not be able to repaste or anything by myself, maybe down the line I ll find someone to do it for me, but out of the box is all good to just enjoy gaming? I saw that you are playing COD MW, I am planning to play that as well, can it run on full details at 144 fps? Do you think this is well future-proofed laptop?

    5. The screen - well it does not have g-sync and reviews showed a bit lower brightness. How is your experience, is it bright enough? Does the omission of the g-sync matter when you play on 100+ fps?

    6. Overall - Has this laptop fullfilled your expectations and would you recommend it even in 2020? It looks like beastly bargain to me ( I love the design too),even if I have to buy extra RAM and maybe SSD down the line.

Thank you very much in advance, I will be eternally grateful for your answers as I cannot find anyone on the bloody internet that has this exact model ( which is important because for example that extra heatpipe).

    1. Yes i7-8750H as you learned in the reviews has almost if not the same performance as the 9750H update
    2. I think 2080 M (not MaxQ nor desktop) remains the fastest laptop GPU with the super version until 30XX comes out but that is not any time soon for mobile versions
    3. I upgraded RAM to 32Gb DDR4-2666 (same as stock one), added one more nvme drive as well removed the hard drive without the need to touch the heatpipes. I did this just for the repaste with LMetal.
    4. You won't run many games full details at 144, I can't do that already on my desktop with a 2080ti... That's the hard truth of nowadays GPUs. If you plan game for long periods of time with a laptop, I suggest you invest as well into a Cooling Pad.
    5. I have the 15.6" FHD (1920x1080), 144Hz, IPS-Level, once calibrated, it is a very good and fluid screen though it remains a bit small for extended gaming. Reviews always mentioned it as pretty good out of the box.
    6. I'm french, ordered this laptop from Belgium as the VAT return was higher. French keyboards are almost the same between BE and FR. With my previous laptop reselling I paid 1.5k€ (instead of ~2.8k€ at the time) for this one that is my main work tool as well so I can't complain :)
