Was playing saints row iv at 1080p max settings. Got tired last night and laid down. Fell asleep for three hours. Game was left running that whole time.

I had it hooked up to my 1080p 60hz sony HDTV. Used nvidia inspector to limit fps to 60 (60 fps is all I need) and vsync on.

When I woke up it looks like gpu was in the low 70s and cpu was in high 60s. Throttle stop used at -.120 for core and cache, max cpu performance and geforce 1070 card set to nvidia driver controlled for power setting. Cpu fan was around 2800rpm and gpu fan was 3800rpm. Fan setting was at auto and shift mode was turbo.

Could I have done any permanent damage? If so I'm ok because I've only had the laptop a week so I could probably rma it and get a replacement. I did not buy an extended warranty.

Also is there a program I can use that uses very little resources where I can set it up to shutdown the computer in 30 minutes if I fall asleep again but would bring up a message to delay or cancel the shutdown?

    Thank you very much.

If gaming for 3 hours was enough to kill a laptop, i'd have gone through hundreds by now. Your laptop should be able to handle gaming 24/7 as long as the temperatures are good.

There would be no market for laptops if they died or caused damage to themselves because a game was idle for a few hours.

Bro, they are made for this. Unless your temperature goes above 85-90 degrees celsius do not worry about some hours of gaming. Heck, my old HP was a toaster (constant 90-95 degrees on CPU and GPU on 105) yet it would still work if it wasn't for a broken HDD.

Everything will be fine, I have been running my laptop now for 2 years+ 24/7 without issues only power down time has been for maintenance Aka cleaning the fans/thermal paste/ system upgrades.

If you think that 3 hours would of damaged your system mine should be gasping for breath/life by now.

Well, I've noticed some game left staying on menus (showing gameplay after a while) does push the fans much higher than actual gaming - was it Dirt Rally?

StarCraft II got some notoriety because some people experienced high GPU temperatures from rendering the menu screen at unlocked frame rates.. but if such a thing actually causes damage beyond merely unnecessary fan wear, the video driver or card firmware or temperature sensor or the cooling hardware or the user's configuring thereof is at fault, since things should throttle to a safe temperature, just like how modern CPUs should throttle before cooking themselves to hardware damage.

Thermal temperatures are fine, so without the PC actually suffering any signs of overheating (shutting down, loud/super fast fans speeds, etc). I doubt any real damage was done for leaving it on and checking it in the morning.

Change the Power Options in Windows to make sure that you have your PC sleep or turn the display off after a period of time.
